But I agree that it’s not \*really \*a hot dog bun sliced from the top. Rather, it’s a very thick slice of bread split from the top. While **Robot Arm** threatened in **jjim** ’s thread to take pictures of honest-to-gosh hot dog buns split down from the top (which seem to be what **Ronald C. Semone** is most familiar with, as well), he never did. The closest we got was these “lobster roll” buns used for hot dogs. **Robot Arm** ’s location is listed as Newton, MA - **Ronald** , are you a MA guy as well? What I can’t figure out is why **Shagnasty** , a southern boy, objected to side split hot dog buns. That’s, as far as anyone can show me, the standard in the South. That’s why I’m wondering if he and I are using “side split” in opposite ways. ---

I’ve never seen such a thing either, but I can see where those Yankee buns might come in handy. If you like a bunch of stuff on your dog, side split hot dog buns aren’t exactly geared to the task, frankly. 😉 Either that, or the side split ones need to be split a bit more down the middle of the side and not the usual 1/3 of the way that leaves that pathetic little flap of bun as the only thing between your shirt and a hot pickle slice. ---

Hot Dog Bun theological battles aside, I hope we can all agree that ketchup has _NO_ place on a hot dog, right? personally, I like the standard pickle relish and mustard (Gulden’s Spicy Brown, please), for the simple, basic grilled dog, sauerkraut is good too though and as far as preferred cooking style goes; outside on a grill or on a cast iron griddle, toasted buttered roll (tied for first place) grilled dog, plain roll steamed (last place, steamed 'dogs and rolls are just nasty, the hot dog is bland, and the bun is soggy, no thanks ---

If I lay my hotdog bun down, it’s side split. If I sit it on it’s hinge, it’s top split. Very simple. You can all pay me now. Actually, I’ve never seen one that looks like the first one **carnivorousplant** linked to. It looks like a folded piece of bread. StG ---

Heh, never seen a top split bun and it makes sense. No, it’s not a side split cut on it’s ‘hinge’. They fall apart every damn time. Never seen one before. And as a guy that likes a dog with everything, including pickles, tomatoes and hot peppers (and of course mustard and relish). ---

I did not know top-split buns existed until I read this thread. Since my mother would usually just use a slice of bread around the dog instead of a bun, it doesn’t matter much to me, although I prefer poppy seed buns. It’s still the top even when the bun is turned on it’s side. Jeez mon. If you turn Natalie Portman on her side, does her head become her elbow? :smack: _sits back to wait for the Natalie Portman/hot dog jokes to commence_ ---

I think I may actually be convinced. At the very least, I will think twice before applying ketchup in the future. But it better be a damn good hot dog. ---
