Nothing wrong with a little pickle relish and some onion, but definitely NO ketchup! Plain ol’ hot dogs can have regular (French’s) mustard, but a brat or Polish gets Plochmann’s, no subs.

 This is the most rediculous thing I have ever heard! You have just insulted two of the greatest institutions in Chicago-the others being the Sox and pizza. A true hot dog has mustard, relish, onions, celery salt, a dill pickle wedge, tomato slices, and sport peppers. I don’t like peppers, but after having been yelled at for ordering one without them (by the proprietor of the establishment and by my father; cut me some slack, I was five) I content myself to pick them off or just suck it up and take it like a man.

Remember: there are only two ways to do anything - the right way and every other way.

If you ever say Chicago sucks again we’ll have a problem!

MAYO! (yes, I am a heathen)

OK, so most places don’t have it. In that case, mustard all the way. Ketchup? Blech. I don’t like onions, but I might put some kraut on. And I don’t do brats.

Okay, that was a little harsh. I’m still waiting to hear WHY ketchup on a hot is no-no. You just can’t order people NOT to do something without a good reason.

One reason I have heard was that the sugars in the ketchup can interfere with the taste of the hot dog.

Taste? Considering what goes into the majority of hot dogs, ketchup can only help. Just because it says “100% Beef” doesn’t mean it’s the choicest cuts.

Both ketchup & mustard on a burger (mayo, too, even), but any member of the sausage family is strictly mustard. I never touch the “yellow” variety, myself - Gulden’s is my favorite, but any deli/spicy mustard is good. And ONIONS!

Both of them, with some nicely diced onions, and maybe, from time to time, some relish.

An observation from my kitchen, concerning three kids:

NONE of my kids used anything except ketchup on a dog or a burger before age 11. My 17 year old will ONLY use mustard at this point. MY 13 year old will still only use ketchup, but he’s weird.

My 10 year old still uses ketchup, but quite often nothing.

I think that people who are still using ketchup on burgers and dogs at age 20+ are not really lovers of good food. They need the sweet, tomato based condiment to make the main course taste betterto them. They might also need ketchup for home fries, scrambled eggs, and a host of other dishes.

But everyone’s different.

Although sometimes I like a bacon cheeseburger, or I’ll add lettuce and tomato to my burger.

Mustard, mustard, mustard; the brighter yellow the better.

Bright green relish is good, too.

And sport peppers.

But not ketchup. Nope. NEVER ketchup.

I love peppers, but I have never heard of sport peppers. What are they?

As for me, I am one of those “no ketchup on hot dogs” people. I like mustard, kraut, onions (especially those cooked onions in the red sauce from Sabrett hot dog carts), or occasionally chili and cheese. And cole slaw can be a nice treat on a hot dog with other stuff. But no ketchup or mayo, please! Eeeewww!

When I was six, I used to put ketchup on my hot dog all the time. Then, while at home for lunch one afternoon, I was halfway through a ketchup laden 12" frank when I was struck by an insight.

Ketchup on hot dogs is really yucky.

With that, I immediately stopped eating and disposed of the hot dog that I had foolishly befouled with the tomato-based condiment. Since then, I always put mustard on my dog. Occasionally, if they’re available, I’ll also put on kraut or sweet relish. However, under no circumstances, will I EVER put ketchup on a hot dog.

I had no idea you people in Chicago were such absolute Nazis about what to put on a hot dog. Since I can’t stand onions, pickles, tomatos, and peppers on my dog, I’ll remind myself to eat something else the next time in Chicago. I don’t want to unnecessarily put my life at risk just because my choice of condiments.

Using German heritage to justify anything won’t fly with me.
Germans put sugar on fresh tomatoes.

Ketchup is a no-no, apart from ‘Karry Wurst’, which is deep fried franks with curry flavoured ketchup (very spicy).

Also, American mustard - like French’s - is an atrocity. That artificial yellow color and that artificial taste - bleh. Mustard should be coarse, dark brown and strong enough to clear the sinuses. I grind my own mustard. In an emergency, Dijon will do.

Sausages: Mustard, sauerkraut, relish, chopped onion

Good one, **JohnBckWLD**! I was just quoting this scene during a discussion of “Play Misty for Me” last night. Funniest exchange in the whole movie. Mind you, Eastwood’s partner is munching casually on his hot dog while leaning over and looking into a car whose (now dead) driver had his crotch shot out.
