Oh, and since this is the Dope, after all, **Fabulous Creature** is correct. Consider thus: Suppose you looked at an incredibly fine level of detail, and determined some minute feature that broke the tie between Jadzia and Kira. One of them would then be second, and the other would be third, correct? In which case, Yar would clearly be fourth. Now, in the real world there must always be some level of detail at which the tie will be broken. It may depend on your mood at a particular moment, and it may be such a small detail that for practical purposes, it doesn’t matter. But one way or the other, the tie can be broken. And no matter which way it’s broken, Yar would still be fourth. Or, if it’s actual usage that you’re concerned about: In the Olympics, when two people tie for the gold, there’s no silver medal, just two gold medals and a bronze. The situation is exactly analogous. ---

The situation is exactly analogous. Nope. Wrong. It is not ‘exactly analogous’. Jadzia and Nerys each get one half of second place. Together, they make up one whole second place. I am going to start a poll about whether anyone actually ever says “first, tied for second, and fourth” in normal usage, because if that is common, I have somehow been halluncinating otherwise my entire life. ---
