What can they do next? They can continue the process of destroying any credibility they once had on defense, and set themselves back to their status immediately after the Vietnam war.
Surely to Christ, Sam, after all that’s happened in four years, it’s time to accept the Iraq War was a bad idea?

The surge concept isn’t going to work, Sam. It doesn’t matter if you fund them as much as you think is necessary; it will fail. It will OBVIOUSLY fail; there is no chance at all it will succeed. If you don’t believe me, let’s put some money on it. Any opposition to the surge lends credibility to one’s position on national defense, because only a liar or a fool would believe it’ll work. I really don’t think Abizaid honestly thinks it’ll work; it’s just the best he could have gotten under today’s circumstances.

The Democrats aren’t going nearly far enough (regrettably, they don’t have enough votes to do what needs to be done anyway) but at least they’re slightly on the right side. You’re not.

> As for ‘supporting the troops’, Democratic hero John Murtha is now trying to do an end-run around the president by cutting off funds for training, armor, and weapons to the soldiers in Iraq. That sure is supporting them, huh?

It sure is, since they’ll be much safer if brought home. That’s what Murtha’s aiming for.

> …accuse the President of going into Iraq without a plan, but now they are agitating to pull out of Iraq without a plan.

First of all, there’s no “accusation.” It’s a matter of confirmed fact.

Secondly, “bring troops home” IS the plan. There’s no need for an occupation plan for Ft. Hood.

Sam, at what point are you going to concede **you were wrong about all of this?** Have you not gone back and read your hilarious 2003 post where you predicted how easy all this would be? ISn’t it time you showed a little humility on this subject, when you’ve been so dramatically, embarassingly proven absolutely wrong? Time to stop digging, buddy.

The U.S. is winning the war. Sam is winning the argument. If you can’t see that you’re just blinded by partisan ideology!

Verbally declaring how you support the troops and actually doing it are not the same.
During the debate on the Bankruptcy Bill the Democrats asked for a couple dispensations. They wanted exemption for people with catastrophic illnesses and for soldiers who keep getting extensions on their service time. The Repub majority voted in one to reject these.
How does that support the troops.?
Not supplying proper armor .How does that support them. ?Endlessly extending their service time and making it more likely to die . How does that support them?
They are pitiously using the patriotism of our soldiers to do their own dirty work.
The point is to nag and harass the occupiers and flee or go into hiding or assimilate into the local population when they come to fight you. They also kill anyone who buddies up with us.

In no way is this ‘getting our ass kicked.’
Who would you say is “winning”, then? :dubious: It ain’t us. Even our own generals say we can’t “win” there militarily. Every metric is trending that way, too.

> We have to leave on our own accord if we wish to get out of there on the short term. Bush isn’t budging. Hence, all hope is on Congress and the Dems…sigh.

'Fraid so.

> When push comes to shove we won’t leave. The American population isn’t demanding it…not yet anyway.

What proof to the contrary \*would \* you accept, if not unanimity of polls? You can’t let yourself indulge in the same delusional thinking that got us into this.

> [@](#):
>
> But hey, if you guys are right then we’ll put forward a timetable for withdrawal and be out of Iraq in oh, say, six months?

That’s about the mean of what “the American people” want, yes.

> [@](#):

> Yet I can’t shake the feeling that it’s more likely for the Dems to just loft in the wind – neither supporting Bush or having the courage to say we need to get out ASAP.

Things are perking, though.
