Bacon from Nebraska is speaking to CNN. He’s a McCarthy loyalist, and this is what he’s saying: - GOP are starting to send feelers to Dems; - can’t be held hostage by 20 political terrorists; - 5 or 6 of the holdouts have said they’d be willing to have Jeffries rather than McCarthy; - the 5 or 6 don’t know how to negotiate and get to yes, so might have to just bypass them; - discussions are underway with Dems; - need to work as a team, and these 5 or 6 don’t want to work as a team; - have conceded almost everything the 5 or 6 want, but they can’t get to yes; - the 5 or 6 are derailing the conservative agenda; - came close to saying that you can’t negotiate with terrorists. ---

The point of the concessions is that is part of the price of having the support of a sufficient number of party members to accomplish whatever agenda they want. The Speaker of the House is not an autocrat. Simply winning the position by crook just kicks the can down the road, potentially only by a few days, since they’re going to actively get in his way at every turn if he tries to bypass them. ---
