Not really, but that’s other people’s arithmetic for you. I saw a website which claimed that there are 60 million feral cats in this country, plus 60 million housecats, which means that 120 million of them hunt outdoors regularly. Sixty plus sixty minus all the strictly indoor cats would seem to equal less than 120, excluding the possiblity that the little fellas can use a doorknob and sneak out in the middle of the night with the humans none the wiser.
I tried to raise two kittens mainly indoors, with some outdoor stints from time to time. Felix never wanted to go outdoors. I brought him outside one or two times, just so he’d know the area around the house a little in case he ever got out, but he just ran back to the door and cried to be let in. He died of FIP when he was about a year old.
Oscar was more adventurous (and apparently immune to FIP). Most of his outdoor time was supervised - the house was big and he never looked restless but he liked to sniff the air as I mowed the lawn. Unfortunately, at some point he was unsupervised enough to get himself killed. No external injuries. Found him dead under his favorite bush, age 1.5. I think he slaked his thirst with some anti-freeze.
So next time I have cats I’ll keep them indoors. If I ever choose a house, I’ll pick one with a nice open-air atrium for the best of both worlds.
