I’ve found web pages that claim you should soak discolored whites in ammonia and water before washing them. Google ammonia+laundry, and I’m sure you’ll find some good hints.
I’ve used it to eradicate ants. Just pour some into the (multiple) openings to a nest. My neighbors had 30 or more little anthills along one foundation wall last year. 20 minutes after pouring the ammonia we hosed the residue away. No more ants for the rest of the summer. Sure it smells, but the odor dissipated shortly and they did not want to use commercial insecticides.
I actually had a similar reason to use ammonia probably for the first time since I bought it many years ago (any expiration date on these?).
Well, I have no idea what my original reason was for buying it but just two days ago, I noticed what looked like a bunch of grains of sand on a houseplant I just bought. Upon closer inspection, the grains were moving so I realized they must be some sort of pest (my vast knowledge on gardening would amaze you all). I looked up on the internet (having no idea what specific pest this was) and all I can find to do was dip a qtip in ammonia and rub the plant with it. I guess it worked but water on a paper towel did too.
tastes great… less filling!
In the book “Seabiscuit,” George Wolff (a jockey) drinks a Coke with a pinch of ammonia in it. Maybe it’s good for jockeys.
maybe that was vinegar for dingy or yellowed whites. Sorry.
Ammonia is great for cutting grease; I use it on the ceramic stovetop and also on a sponge to clean the tops of cabinets in the kitchen… the greasy dusty grime. It will deter ants if you spray their trails. Mix your own window cleaner with ammonia & water; get the non-sudsy ammonia. Bet of all it’s cheap and it works. I prefer a cap of bleach in drains and to soak/sterilize that grease trap in the dishwasher. All you really need to clean around the house is some dishwashing detergent, bleach, and ammonia. Don’t mix bleach and ammonia, though; and don’t pee in the toilet if you have used bleach to clean/sterilize. It makes a funky gas.

The bite treater for mosquito bites that I use is like 98% ammonia. Next time I’m not going to buy the fancy “bite stick” I’ll just go right to the source and get ammonia.
It stings (and stinks) like crazy for a little while, but it works really well!
Er, I’m going to guess he did that to make himself throw up, or as an extreme laxative (with the Coke to cover up the taste). Jockeys are all about keeping food in their body for as short a time as possible. (Or were…hopefully that doesn’t still go on to that extent.)
When one purchases household cleaners for countertops, stoves, floors and the like - guess what - the main active ingredient is Ammonia. It’s great stuff, and a lot cheaper. I save the spray bottles and make my own. Add a drop of blue food coloring and nobody will ever know.
It’s also good to flush a healthy slug or two down the toilet periodically, along with dishwashing detergent, to keep, er, things moving smoothly through the system.
