> A doctor in his mid-30’s took a DNA test a few years ago-as a hobby not because he wondered why he didn’t look like his dad. His DNA results were confusing and led him on a detective hunt, using message boards, on-line DNA results and family trees. It required much work and skill for him to unravel his mystery. Finally he sent me an e-mail last year asking if we might be related. There is no country that we’d both ever lived in!

> DNA testing confirmed what I already knew from the details he had provided: I have a son that I’d known nothing about. We’ve become friends; there are surprising similarities in our philosophies, temperaments and interests. On opposite sides of the world, we’ve not met in person yet, but that may change soon.

I find this kind of sweet, actually. I think it’s nice that they’ve met, and they have a lot in common.

> One would think it would be generally pretty rare that anyone would actually have occasion to be able to re-use previous work but I suppose since most universities have courses that cover similar if not more or less identical material, especially at the undergrad level (which is what this sounds like to me), I guess it’s possible.

Heck, I think I did it three times:
A paper on preservation of Machu Picchu for an anthropology course and then for a History of Latin America course
A paper on the effects of Pals Battalions for a History of Great Britain course and for a general western civ course
A paper on the Baptism of Poland for a European history course and a world religions course.

All were undergrad courses and before the era of online plagiarism databases. I tweaked them all the second time to better fit that class but they were at least 80% recycled and I can’t say I felt bad about it since it legitimately was my work and research.

Here is a secret:

I’ve found fairly convincing evidence that a local media personality in my town is into furry porn. I won’t tell anyone, and it doesn’t bother me - whatever floats your boat. I personally know this person, and they’re very nice, so live and let live.
Just thought it was a bit surprising that I actually found this out.

My brother’s son (my nephew) recently did 23&me, as did a number of his mother’s relatives (his cousins). My nephew was evaluating everyone’s results and he came to the conclusion that his mom has a different father than her (half) brothers. Nobody (other than his grandma) knows about this, and grandpa is dead.

My brother is trying to convince his son that his mom and grandmother do not need to hear about this. I’m just watching, chuckling, from the sidelines.
