Maybe this belongs in CS - it’s music related.

This weekend the family were driving to a nearby park with a lake for a little fishing\picnic. I had last drove the car so my station was on, one of the various classic rock stations. The second song turned on and after about a minute my wife changed the station. I was like, “whoa, hold on a second”. She says, “I don’t know what that was, it is even music?” The song…

Born to Run :smack:

I was gobsmacked for a second. Now Bruce is not one of my favorites, but I put him in the category with Bob Dylan - genius songwriter, shitty singer. But c’mon Born to Run, not even music?!?

So I quickly Googled it - #16 all time greatest Rock & Roll song. She’s like I don’t like Rock. Which is BS because we listen to a ton of classic and alternative rock. Oh well, not a hill I’m willing to die on.

One other reason to discredit her taste in music - she likes Nickelback. But we have to stay together for the good of the kids. 😃

 You needed to check this before making a commitment.
Not so long ago, my husband and I heard Billy Joel’s Keepin’ the Faith on the radio. Husband commented, “That’s not a bad song…never heard it.” I’m like, “How is that even possible? What planet were you on since 1980?” During further conversation, we determined that he is also utterly unfamiliar with Goody Two Shoes, by Adam Ant. I’m not saying that’s a _bad_ thing, but HOW?
Husband also “doesn’t like female singers, except Janis Joplin.” Okay. I’m not even listening to this guy anymore.

Married 22 years, way too late. She has had a very sheltered life, culturally. She is Mexican and grew up in a pretty traditional household, so there are a lot of things that I am dumbfounded that she doesn’t know.

A couple years ago I said our son is like Jekyll and Hyde and she had no idea what I was talking about.

I happen to think that Springsteen is a fine singer, better than Dylan. YMMV.

My first wife hated Hendrix, Joplin, Doors, Cream and everything else that I loved. She liked Mantovani, Jerry fucking Vale, Petula fucking Clark and every other lounge-singing elevator music-producing ‘artist’ out there. I didn’t know this until after we were married. She walked into the room when I was blasting Purple Haze and made that are-you-insane face that I came to loathe. For the next 20 years, I had to wait until she was out of the house to crank the tunes. I made sure my kids all got a major dose of it, too. Since the divorce over 20 years ago, I think she’s been to three or four Neil Diamond concerts.

Agreed. Springsteen sounds like Pavarotti compared to Dylan.

I think my husband only knows Adam Ant because I played it on car trips. Not sure he’s familiar with most of Billy’s songs.

Luckily, musical tastes have nothing to do with a successful marriage.

Now, what DOES is being willing to listen to the white bread pop stuff your wife likes while she’s driving…

I don’t know them either. Not everyone’s been on the same planet since 1980, or listened to the same radio stations.

I’ve heard _Keepin’ the Faith_, but am not a great Billy Joel fan. I know the name Adam Ant, but couldn’t tell you a single one of his songs, and am also utterly unfamiliar with Goody Two Shoes. My excuse is that in the early 1980s. I was living most of the time on a small remote off the coast of New Zealand.😉

That said, I’m probably unfamiliar with most pop music and music groups since 1980. I’ve lived most of the time since then outside the US, and I don’t get my music from the radio. What I mostly pick up is music I’ve heard in bars or guests on SNL.

Dylan, not a great voice, but the only voice that could sing Dylan’s songs like Dylan meant to have them sung. And they were _his_ songs. For the most part, he doesn’t sing other song writer’s music (which is probably a good thing). I have heard other artists sing some music he has written, but haven’t been impressed and prefer Dylan on vocal.

The spirit of Jimi Hendrix takes a large, odiferous dump on your computer keyboard.

While there is a sizable overlap of my and Mrs. J.'s pop/rock tastes, there’s also a vast and sometimes disturbing realm of her likes that I can’t get into, including folk and Xmas tunes. We both generally enjoy Underground Garage on Sirius however.

Hey, even Dylan said that Hendrix’s cover of **All along the watchtower** blew him away.

> [@](#):
>
> “It overwhelmed me, really,” he said in 1995. “He had such talent, he could find things inside a song and vigorously develop them. He found things that other people wouldn’t think of finding in there.”. Later in 2018 he said: "ever since he died I’ve been doing it that way. Strange how when I sing it, I always feel it’s a tribute to him in some kind of way.”

Personally I prefer Dylan’s original versions over just about any cover. Particularly with **Mr. Tambourine Man** and **Quinn the Eskimo**. And I love Dylan’s version of **Watchtower**. But damn, IMHO, Hendrix **OWNS** that puppy.

Also, TILT: It’s _Adam_ And, not Atom Ant. :smack:
