I paid 4.22 today. (A 4.25 regular price with a three cent discount because I have this station’s loyalty card.) This was in western NY.

So much winning at the pump.

What the hell kind of car do you drive that needs/wants 88 octane fuel, but doesn’t like 87? And where are you getting 85?

@wguy123, @Zakalwe - I live in Colorado Springs - like a lot of US states along the Rocky Mountains at altitude they sell lower-octane gas based on the very old research that higher altitudes allow for more knock tolerance. 85 is what is sold as “regular” most places in town. 87 is “mid grade” if it’s sold at all, as a lot of places just do 85 and 89/91. So if I want 87 octane for by 2025 Prius PHEV, it’s a blend, since the Costco only offers 85 and 91.

Thankfully, with 50ish miles of all electric range, I don’t put gas in it all that often, or it’d be a lot more frustrating. If it were my old 2002, or 2007, I wouldn’t care about the 85 so much… but the new car is still under warranty, and I don’t want to give them any excuses…

Interesting. Never thought of trying that. Our gas powered vehicle for the last 14 years is a Subaru so we are used to lots of pinging!

Our main vehicle is now an PEV. The old Subaru only gets pulled out for real adventures these days.

DH’s preferred station just dropped 20 cents/gallon since yesterday, putting the official price at $4.999. With loyalty app discounts, he’ll actually pay 10-15 cents/gallon less than the official price.

My preferred E85 station is holding steady at $2.499 for card purchases. That extra 10 cents/gallon over the cash price is slightly irritating, but I am aware of bank processing fees for card purchases and live in a questionable enough part of town that I prefer not to carry much if any cash.

The last cycling target in Ohio from 2 weeks ago was $4.39. [For the last year or so, even before Iran, I’ve suspected that the lead chain, Speedway, had been setting their targets well above the typical wholesale + $1 markup, and this was just another example.]

I got my premium fillup (incl. my -$1.10 in discounts) yesterday for $3.42–yes, the marquee price for regular was a whopping 87 cents below what it had been 10 days earlier. Note this is the same station that went UP 90 cents when I was driving to my relatives in NJ last Christmas, so _if_ I can time my arrival optimally…

Crude and gasoline prices are becoming decoupled from each other, likely because the former are based on what the daytraders do, while the latter is more based on essential supply of refined fuel vs. demand in the country in question. Since reaching a peak of $96 on 6-3, the US crude benchmark has dropped $27 to $69 today, and, unbelievably, is about where it likely would have been without the war (low point was $56 in mid-December), since summer blends and higher (vacation) demand would have caused it to rise $10-15 over the winter valley.

But wholesale gasoline is well above its own valley from back then, $1.71/gallon vs. $2.98 today and has only dropped about 21 cents since 6-3; applying the rough rule of thumb ratio of 30:1 (barrel vs. gallon) wholesale gas should be around $2.20 right now. It may be awhile before they equalize, as even if the American supply issues are resolved tomorrow (which they won’t be), the “feather” lag will still mean it would take at least a month to fall that far.
