How are you irrationally frugal

I am frugal by nature so tend as much as possible not to waste anything. I will generally only buy something when it’s absolutely necessary and very rarely make an impulse purchase.
On the other hand though and am generous when it comes to family and friends and will spend money on entertainment.

You win!

In a photo-finish with Jervoise and the 2 cents of petrol…

I didn’t say it was healthier. I just said that butter comes from a cow, and not a test tube.

That said, I don’t slop butter all over everything. It’s a flavoring, not a food group. I just like the taste better than margarine’s.

My husband used to read me the riot act because I couldn’t bring myself to spend any money on clothes. But he made an interesting argument - we can easily spend $30-$50 for a meal out that’s over in a couple of hours - why should I fret over spending that or more on clothing that I can wear for months or years? And he’s right. Now, I’m not going to shell out hundreds for a trendy top or shoes or something, but I no longer try to limit myself to the $20 and under rack.

I deserve it, dammit!

A book recommendation: The Tightwad Gazette series by Amy Dacyczyn.

Being a Poor College Student[sup]TM[/sup] for the past three and a half years, I have learned several tricks to saving money.

Laundry. It was $1.00 a wash and $1.00 a dry. That’s $2.00 a week, normally. But I never did laundry until I absolutely needed to, re-wearing everything at least once, including socks and underwear (and notice I said at least once…some pants got up to five days, I think.) Then, when there was no denying I had to wash clothes (usually about 1 month), I cramed things as much as possible into two washers, paid my $1.00 each, then shoved them into one dryer (this one dryer now has four times the amount of clothes it really should,) and dry them for one cycle. I would then hang dry everything till dry. I had a clothes rack, but it only held about 1/3 my clothes, so every place to hang something, chairs, beds, desks, doorknobs, corners of a bookshelf, had laundry hanging off of it. What might normally be $8.00/month turned into $3.00/month.

A couple weeks ago, I had the flu and lost all appetite. The one day I ate something (mac 'n cheese) it made me VERY sick and vomiting ensued. Well, since I ate almost nothing that week, I saved money on food. The next week, I was getting better and starting to get my appetite back. But since I didn’t want to spend money unless I had to, I only had to merely think about the mac 'n cheese to make me lose all feelings of hunger. So I basically intentionally made myself sick so that I could save money on food.

I hate spending money for utilities (I hate Nevada Power & Southwest Gas!!)such as electricty for the AC and the gas company for heat. So I wait as long as possible before I turn the AC on, it helps that I have ceiling fans in every room of the house, but this is Vegas and it get pretty warm early in the year (today is is like 85F). And in the winter I wait as long as possible before resorting to the hearter. My husband complains about wanting the heat on because he is cold. I just tell him to put on a sweatshirt and quit whining

But as far as everything else I have no willpower :o . I routinely spend 50+ bucks on jeans (Ill pay it as long as they fit well), buy the overpriced Ben&Jerrys. I have specific brands I use for everything (must have Crest toothpaste and Diet Dr Pepper soda) and I never buy cheap booze. I pay 25 bucks for haircuts every other month. I get my nails done every two weeks for $35 (including tip) and I spend lots of moeny on eBay adding to my Absolut Vodka advertisment collection.
