Ok, I think I’m going to go for it. The lights I was talking about is the ceiling fan; I’m going to replace the regular bulbs with colored ones. So nothing will fall in the pool unless the house collapses, in which case I can write off the water damage ;).
You guys can say I’m gross if you want, but I’m not going to bother with filtration and chlorine and stuff. It’s one night, just us 5, and I’m asking everyone to shower well ahead of time. We aren’t really going to be swimming, just lounging. I won’t drink the water. I think the idea with the litter pan of water is good, that will keep a lot of debris out. I’m also looking around for a smaller pool that can still hold 5 adults. The water height is about 20 inches on these, and that is quite a bit. If I could halve that I would feel better. I’m not seeing anything so far though.
Also, I’m going to look into weight, but I suspect we’ll be ok. It’s a thick concrete slab, and people park some pretty huge truck in their carports here (Mississippi!) and I’ve never known anyone to have a problem. Like I said, I’m going to research it more, but I think it should be ok.
And I will absolutely take pictures for you guys! I am so excited!!
As others have said, plan on the pool water being cold, I would boil large pots of water in addition to setting the water heater as high as it goes once you have a base of regular cold water in there given how little water you will get before the hot water heater is empty and you are just using cold tap water. It will cool off fairly quick, but with the hot temperature of the house and some boiled water as you get closer to the start of the party, you get make it perfect. One night without chemicals or filters will be fine. If it’s just a bunch of adults, it should be flawless and given the circumstances of the garage/living room, I think you are uniquely qualified to have such a party with minimal risk. Party on!
Cover the electrical outlets in the walls as well…better yet, turn off the electricity to that room at the breaker panel and use the electricity from another room and light it from the upper corner of the room away from the pool.
When my family put in the backyard pool, my friend and I went swimming the afternoon after it was filled. We were young, stupid and lucky we did not freeze!
Guys pay attention. It’s an inflatable kiddie pool, just one that’s big enough for a few adults to lounge in. They aren’t that huge. The slab will be fine. You need that force concentrated in a small surface area to break it; a pool of that size has an enormous footprint to distribute the weight. You can install a 600 gallon aquarium on most normal slabs without an issue and that has a far smaller distribution than a big kiddie pool which will be spread directly onto the floor.
Considering that this is nothing more than an oversized bathtub for one night chemicals are absurd. Though if you were inclined you could purchase a couple of big bags of rock salt to throw into it while you are filling. That would take care of anything a human could carry other than someone having a bowel movement in the pool, at which point I daresay everyone would exit at any rate. 50 lb bag per 100 gallons will give you a nice brackish water that is sanitary and doesn’t sting eyes.
No need to turn off the electric, simply cover any low outlets that might get waterlogged in the event of a catastrophic pool failure with heavy plastic and some duct tape.
