Inspired by [this thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=670566).

Let’s get the obvious one out of the way: they should/could kill off Jar Jar in a horrible way - something in the vein of that photoshopped picture of ground up Jar Jar meat would be good.

Now, I don’t want to always be the guy with the zany, far out ideas, but, what about, hear me out, getting a decent writer working on the script? That could actually work.

Step 1. Pay money to George Lucas to stay away. Sounds good so far!

I don’t know how well they would do in film since it is a different medium but the people responsible for producing The Clone Wars CGI show have shown amazing ability to produce inside this universe, with a strong grasp of what made Star Wars great.

If anyone has proven themselves capable they have.

The SW universe is still a great place to set a story, but personally, I’d like them to make a clean break from the existing movies. Set the new ones a hundred years after ROTJ, or a thousand years before Phantom Menace.

I just cannot see another actor playing Han Solo, and Harrison Ford is to old to reprise the role. I don’t want another Indiana Jones and the Troublesome Prostate.

Nope. He wasn’t in the original trilogy so having him pop up afterwards would just jar (assuming that episodes 7-9 are set after 4-6). Just pretend that he doesn’t exist. Hell, pretend that Naboo doesn’t exist.

I could totally see Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher playing the parents of our hero (or heroine). Uncle Luke could join in as well. Aren’t there books and stuff already that starr Han and Leia’s kids?

I’m pretty sure that at least one of their kids is dead

For the most enthusiastic fans, there is absolutely nothing that will keep this film from somehow being a disappointment.

There really is no pleasing you people.

For everyone else, the movie will please us if it gives us some awesome special effects, a high-speed chase scene, a simple, unconvoluted plot, and a couple of yuks.

Well, it _was_ a long, long time ago.

My own opinion is that it cannot be a sequel trilogy, that would lead up to disappointments. The actors are too old to play them realistically, Ford might not be willing to come back, I am pretty sure Chewie is dead and lets face it, the EU after Thrawn Trilogy is mostly crap.

I would love to see Force Unleashed on screen. Knights of the Old Republic Era is another ripe place to set it. Another idea would be an episode set between IV and V, basically the search for Luke Skywalker, it would link the two trilogies very well, as Vader confronts the past.

I’d like to add, that the movie absolutely _must_ begin in the same opening sequence fashion as the others, with the sudden brass blare of music, and the back story script fading into the stars, with the camera panning from the stars downward to the opening scene.

And having John Williams on board would certainly be a big plus.

I disagree. I don’t know what the plot should be or what characters it should encompass or what actors should be in it. But I do know this: I want \*less \* special effects than episodes 1-3. I don’t want every scene to be jammed with digital creations that dazzle the eye. I don’t want actors doing 99% of their work in front of green screens. I don’t want a movie where half the budget goes to putting things in in post production that they couldn’t film in the first place.

I want an adventure and a compelling story. There’s a reason why fans hated episodes 1-3 and it’s not because it could never live up to expectations. It’s because what Lucas was interested in (making the most state of the art special effect film) was not what created fans from episodes IV-VI.

Be true to the look, feel, and lore of the original 3 movies. Don’t go crazy with glowy lights and CGI. Continue Return of the Jedi like it was still the 1980s. Cleaning up remnants of the Empire, Luke reconciling his Jedi status, Han Solo doing something rougish, etc.

Or just a 90 minute torture porn with Jar Jar as the victim would be fine too.

Luckily, I didn’t give a definition for “awesome”.

I somewhat agree with you, but let’s face it, science-fiction/fantasy _film_ in general, and Star Wars in particular, has _always_ been about special effects, and dazzling the eye. How the balance can be struck in a beautifully awesome way, between story and motion picture technology is, hopefully, what the sci-fi/fantasy genre aspires to.

I have this image of Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia, recovering alcoholic and Jedi master of of witty but deadly sarcasm, having intensive therapy sessions conducted by the ghost of Obi-Won Kenobi.

If they can explain away the theory of midichlorians as the modern day equivalent of belief in balancing humors as a medical practice or that midichlorians are attracted to people who are strong in the force rather than the source of force energy, it would go a long way for this nerd.
