Don’t you guys in the UK have something called “ant day” that…is “celebrates” the right word…this? (Not a singular day, but I could swear I’ve recently heard a reference to it on some podcast.)
I don’t think there’s any official ‘ant day’ that we mark in calendars, but people use the term ‘flying ant day’ to describe the occurrence of synchronised mating flights of ants. We’ve had one such day this week as the UK is experiencing a bit of a heatwave and high humidity, which is the ‘go’ signal for the ants.
I woke up this morning to a stream of ants running from the kitchen floor into the living room and across the couch to the front door. I spent almost 2 hours vacuuming them up and searching unsuccessfully for their point of entry. I’ve placed bait traps and laid down diatomaceous earth in likely places of ingress…fingers crossed. It’s been hot the last couple of days and I’m sure they’re looking for moisture. I’m sorry guys, you need to go look someplace else.
(I’ve lived in this place for 19 years, this is the first time I’ve had ants)
According to my mother, they taste “like peanut butter”, although she is describing a type of termite that similarly fly for a short period.
So perhaps the best way to deal with them is in combination with toast and jelly?
