How big of a turnoff would not having a bathtub in the master bath be to you?

That’s how my last house was set up. A tub in the main house bathroom and just a shower in the master bathroom. Suited me just fine. I rarely wanted to soak in the tub, but it was nice to have it once in awhile.

If I really liked the house otherwise, I might be okay without a tub these days. The older I get, the harder it would be to get in and out of, I suspect.

We took out the master bath soaker tub in our previous house and put in a huge spa shower instead. When we sold there was a bidding war and we had only positive feedback about the fantastic master bathroom shower. There was still a bathtub in the main bathroom.

We are currently designing a custom home which will not have a bathtub in the master, there will be a steam shower instead. Near the extra bedrooms we will have a tub/shower combo though, we need a tub for bathing the dog.

We do like to soak … in the hot tub. All our houses have had an outdoor hot tub.

I take a bath almost every day. It’s my way of relaxing. For me, it would be a dealbreaker not to have a tub in the master bathroom, although I’ve never lived in a house that has what I would call a “master bathroom.” They’re all just regular bathrooms. But if I had a nice, big fancy bathroom, fuck yeah a tub would be an absolute requirement.

I looked at a house recently that had a clawfoot tub upstairs and no shower. The only shower was in the in-law apartment. I wasn’t a fan of that set up at all because I never take baths, only showers.

Your proposal would be much better, but really, walk in showers can leak (my dad’s does, so he never uses it) so a shower/bath combo would be best.

I would prefer a nice shower and no tub.

It’s much easier to wash a dog in a shower that has a hose than in a tub. Wet the dog down, soap up, rinse. You can’t properly rinse the dog in a tub.

I haven’t used a bathtub since I was oh, 5? So I’d definitely go for the fancy shower.

I have one bathroom in this house and it has a small, shallow tub that I had to add a shower head attachment to so I could shower. I have no idea how the family who owned this house before me managed bathing with just that tub. I desperately miss the claw foot soaker tub from my last house.

I love taking baths, but in the morning, I need to shower quickly and get ready for work. I suppose if there was a decent bathtub somewhere else in the house, not having one in the master bathroom wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me.

We don’t have a hose in the shower, so I got one with an adapter that will attach to the sink faucet. Works a treat, and the adapter part can be used with a garden hose if you want hot water outside too (comes in handy if you need to wash a skunked dog).

When I was growing up, in our houses the only tub was in the main bath off the corridor and accessible to all bedrooms. The bath attached to the master suite was shower only.

No it wouldn’t be a turnoff to me now that I am older , it would be safer to have shower, I could walk into and not worry about falling climbing in and out of a bathtub now. I live in a condo and I am not sure if I can put a shower in my bathroom.

There’s a budgetary consideration, I think. I’d say, put in the fanciest bathroom you can afford. If you had the option of an average shower, or a fancy-dan tub with jets and dancing girls and ponies, go with the tub. If it’s the other way around, put in the snazzy shower.

All this presuming of course that you’re thinking of selling your place. If not, then heed Aspidistra’s advice, and put in what you want.

I’m another one who’s found that the decadent pleasure of a long soak is more fancy than fact. I can’t take a book in to the tub, because I’ll either be sitting up so far that my torso will not get wet at all, or I’ll have to hold the book up at an uncomfortable angle. Either way, my book will get wet. Then the water starts to get cold, and I have to put the book down and slosh to the end to put in more hot water. Not to mention the feeling that I’m marinating in my own effluvia. I never really feel clean after a bath.

Now, a long shower with hot, soapy water cascading over my head and suds sliding down my back…ah, that’s paradise enow.

This. For many people over 50 a walk-in shower would do more for resale value than a bathtub.

We are out in the country, you can’t see the house from the road or any neighbors from the house . nudity isn’t a problem.

We have two bathrooms – hers has only a walk-in shower, mine a tub. However, not once in the 12-1/2 years we’ve lived in our present home have we used the tub. I just take showers in it. We bought the place new and had the option of no tub, but we thought maybe it was a good idea to have one. But it turned out no. And these are little Thai tubs, so I wouldn’t fit very well, especially these days, even should I decide to use it. The last two homes we’ve had in Thailand had showers only. Would prefer no tub – unless we get the hankering to make some gin, that is.

We have a master bath with a shower and another bath with a tub. I wouldn’t want to replace the shower with a tub. I prefer the shower, and one tub is enough.

Well, yeah. I didn’t know people literally took baths to clean aside from small children. I take a shower to clean and then fill the tub for my bath. Even then though it was my understanding that after a bathing-to-clean-yourself bath, you just turned the shower head on for 20 seconds to give the tub a rinse. It’s not like a permanent ring is gonna build up in just a week or two (dependent on how often you do your whole-bathroom cleaning)

Our master bath only has a walk-in shower. The original bathroom from before the expansion of the house has a tub and a small shower. I don’t think I’ve ever used the tub, and my wife has maybe a few times. And I agree that washing the dog is far easier in the shower with our hose attachment. When the kids come back they use the shower in the old bathroom also.

I just did a full remodel on our master bath - tore everything out back to the studs, joists and sub-floor. It had a walk in shower with no tub before the reno and has the same after, so I guess it wasn’t a deal breaker! We do have 2 other full baths in the house and they each have a tub, so if it’s a bath the missus desires, then a bath she may have.

It depends.

These days, I’m not going to leave much of a ring in a tub from just one bath. Back when I rode horses, though, things could get nasty. But the long, hot soak was a must for sore joints and muscles, and loosed up the dirt. Yes, sometimes the long hot soak was followed by a shower to finish the cleaning, followed by cleaning the tub.

Most people don’t get that dirty in a day. But if you do, you adapt your cleaning routine to fit.

Deal-breaker: I bathe.
