> I’m still not buying an association merely on the basis of value, even if it was valuable. All the other associations are more specific. Basically you’re still saying they are associated because they were “left over.” We’re missing some aspect of the qualities of tin, or of Jupiter, that led them to be linked.

I don’t know that this necessarily explains anything, but the Etruscans worshiped a sky god that was roughly equivalent to Jupiter, named [Tinia.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinia)

Anyway, anyone else seen the movie yet? I just got back, and thought it was really good. A lot darker than I expected, particularly an early scene where Sivana establishes his bad-guy bonafides. But it avoids the mistake the DCU has been making, in not making the _hero_ dark at all. Billy Batson is convincing as a troubled but decent kid, and Zach Levy really sells the concept of a fourteen year old in Superman’s body. I could have done with maybe ten minutes less of “Billy fucking around with his superpowers,” and like most origin movies, I really wanted to see more of him at the top of his powers, but those are minor complaints. Overall, I really liked it.

There’s two credit scenes - a mid credit scene that’s setting up the sequel, and an after-credits scene that’s basically an outtake from earlier. It’s pretty skipable.

> I’d like to take this opportunity to use this post to promote my favorite comic book/pop culture resource, the MTR Network. They do a Character Corner podcast, where they cover the relevant history of comic characters, and they’ve taken up the practice of focusing on characters that have upcoming movies. If you’re interested in a deep dive into the characters’ histories, but prefer an audio/podcast format to reading the wikipedia entries, I highly recommend MTR Network!
>
> Here’s a trio of podcasts they’ve released in the past month, which cover the history of Captain Marvel (All of the Marvel iterations, as well as the Fawcett/DC version):
>
> Part 1: The Life and Death of Mar-Vell: [Captain Marvel Part 1 - The Life & Death of Mar-Vell - MTR Network](https://www.mtrnetwork.net/character-corner/marvel/captain-marvel-part-1-the-life-death-of-mar-vell/)
> Part 2: Monica Rambeau and Carol Danvers: Heavy Hitters of the Marvel Universe: [Captain Marvel Part 2: Monica Rambeau and Carol Danvers, Heavy Hitters of the Marvel Universe - MTR Network](https://www.mtrnetwork.net/character-corner/marvel/captain-marvel-part-2-monica-rambeau-and-carol-danvers-heavy-hitters-of-the-marvel-universe/)
> Part 3: Billy Batson, Shazam and the Marvel Family: [Captain Marvel Part 3: Billy Batson, Shazam & the Marvel Family - MTR Network](https://www.mtrnetwork.net/character-corner/dc/captain-marvel-part-3-billy-batson-shazam/)

On your recommendation, I downloaded a bunch of Character Corner episodes. I was really excited about this concept and I have listened to parts of two or three episodes. I’m trying to finish them but … I really don’t like the way these guys present.

Their banter is not funny, they waste too much time, making the postcards twice as long as they need to be with their not-funny banter, and they get hung up over minor bullshit as if it’s important. They don’t do any deep analysis of character, theme, or story, and just obsess over shallow stuff like “plot holes” and continuity. Really adolescent nerd perspective.

I’m not done with them yet but it’s not looking good.

He had nothing to do with tin. The English word is of Germanic origin, the Latin word being _stannum_, from which we get the chemical symbol Sn.
