Springfield, OH immigrants: what's the actual story?

Let’s take it as a given that illegal Haitian immigrants are not eating pets in Springfield. But what actually is happening? I have heard nothing about this in the news until it came up in the debate. So how many Haitians are there in Springfield? How and why did they come there?

The case has already been mentioned in that thread, so I think commenting on it is fair game (in my opinion).
