Perhaps the mantenance only took a few minutes, but the mods wanted a break for this weekend, so they TOLD everyone that the board would be down… That means… I think The mods are all off at the beach or something. WOO HOO! Anything goes!! Oh wait. They could see this on monday, couldn’t they. Never mind… ---

The boards seem a lot faster now. Maybe it’s because almost nobody is on here? 😃 Hey, wait a minute. Why can’t the SDMB be ‘closed’ perminantly? It’d sure be great for the traffic… ---

The board is DEFINITELY faster now (7/29/01 6:15amPDT) than it has been for the last two weeks. I had problems with my DSL and we ran tests in a number of sites. This was the only site clogging my pipes. If Unca Cece wasn’t a genius, I’d fix his wagon. ---

Yah, y’all went out and got real lives for the weekend, and all for nothin’. Now, me, I have no life, so I’ve been poking my head in here off and on all weekend, and I have yet to see the boards down. And they’ve been running slicker ‘n’ a greased pig, I can tell you. That’s because everybody left to go get a life, leaving those of us with _no_ lives in sole possession of the Straight Dope Message Board. So, guys, whaddaya wanna do? They won’t be back till Monday morning. Howzabout we jump on the bed, drink all the Pepsi, eat all the chips, and leave pizza boxes on the computer hutch… ---

I’m not sure if you were kidding there, but I did indeed locate a copy of the work in question today, and will post exerpts (I’m pretty sure anything published in 1832 can be quoted from liberally without running afoul of copyright laws) and conclusions drawn therefrom later this evening, in the original thread. Yes, I think I’ve officially proven that I have no semblance of a social life whatsoever.
