I’m having an argument with a man in print. It’s fun.

But I’m having trouble finding historical data on GNP going back to the 1800s. Is there anyplace I can find that? And possibly some information on cyclical business panics?

Start with the Data section on the St. Louis Fed. It’s incomparably complete.

I just Googled “GNP Historical data 1800”. The #2 result was this just-created thread itself! #3 result was [a Wikipedia article](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_history_of_the_United_States), which contains a [graph of per capita GNP from 1869 to 1918](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:US-GNP-per-capita-1869-1918.png) and a [cruder graph from 1700 to 1840.](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:GROWTH1850.JPG). The Wikipedia article looks like a good read.

(The #1 Google result was a 9-year old unanswered query on another forum. #4 and #5 results were useless and reported “These terms only appear in links pointing to this page: 1800.”)
