I sometimes get caker sores on my tongue. That’s painful.
Anyway, once I get them, I find the best thing to do is avoid the following:
Acidic fruits and juices (oranges/orange juice, etc. - anything tangy)
Sodapop;
Coffee;
Tomato sauce.
Keep your mouth moist. I tend to drink a lot of water.
I’ve heard the following helps:
Calcium, l-lysiene, an OTC drug called Lactinex (you have to ask for it in the pharmacy, they keep it refrigerated), homeopathic borax.
The last time I got a sore I took en masse the lysiene, the lactinex, and the homeopathic borax, each as per instructions, and within two days the sore was gone. Then I kept taking lysiene twice a day; during that time I had no problems. I stopped taking them, and I started getting the stores again.
Next time I’m trying that toothbrush thing. It sounds so painful, it must work.
I once started taking Claritin because I was getting hives on my wrists, and about two weeks into the treatment, all my canker sores disappeared. Up until then, I had been a life-long sufferer from canker sores, always having 6-8 bad ones in my mouth at any one time. As long as I stay on Claritin, I will have 0-1 mild ones instead.
My brother is also a sufferer, and on my advice tried taking Claritin on a daily basis, and he also reports similar results. I can only suppose that allergies to one or more of the foods listed above are the cause of our canker sores. Now that Claritin is available over-the-counter, it’s certainly worth a try. Give it at least a two-week trial to see if you get any results.
White Lightning- nope, SLS does cause “canker” sores in some people. It’s not such a big deal, as all they are is painful (although note they could lead to other nastier infections- I suppose AIDS could enter through one, even). If you are prone to canker sores in your mouth, then give up on SLS toothpaste. Plain old baking soda & salt does OK, althought I prefer Biotene. Rembrant is OK, too. “Toms” is NOT SLS free, despite being 'all natural".
Lysine helps with Herpes sores, and may help with canker sores, too. “Abreva” is for Herpes/cold sores on the OUTSIDE of the mouth, not “canker” sores on the INSIDE. There is some relation between the two, although canker sores aren’t caused by the Herpes virus. IANAD YMMV
Also good for both is Acidolpholus- either in pill form, or from live culture yogurt. This also helps with Yeast infections.
Of course, this being the SD, I have to inform Exo that “homeopathic” anything doesn’t work (well, there is the Placebo effect). We have debunked this over & over.
And, yes, Vitamin C can help, although the acid also can cause a canker sore. Odd, isn’t it?
