If anything is to be learned from this thread, it is the importance of having multiple lines of credit when travelling abroad.
My stepmother had her handbag stolen in France. “No problem,” my father said, after phoning the bank and telling them. “We can use my card.” No chance - his card was on the same account as the stolen one so it was also stopped.
When we go to continental Europe, we have three separate cards: Visa. Mastercard and a Debit card on my bank account. My wife and I have a CC each and the debit card is left in a secure place.
I’m thinking it would also be worthwhile to set up Apple or Google Pay on your phone(s), tied to yet another credit card that’s not on your person.
