Focus on getting your degree and getting out of the midwest. I live near one of the non-binary havens – it’s hard to know what half the people identify as out here. Google Northampton MA. You will be safe here as long as anywhere is. You’ll have friends and comrades. ---

Exactly. But the states will fall in line with the "great’ leader. Yeah, you better hide. Change your looks. Change your demeanor. Join an underground group, if you must. Stay off social media sites with like groups. Assimilation is much better than concentration camps, reeducation camps or death. You’re safe inside your head. Only. IMHO ---

I am not even sure in what way a non-binary person behaves differently. One of my grandsons is non-binary and outside of they/their I cannot discern anything he does that a cis-male wouldn’t. Now it could be very different for a gay or transsexual. ---

If you consider relocating, take a look at Washington state. We have had an uninterrupted succession of Democratic governors since 1985, and just re-elected another. Nine of our 10 Congressional reps are Dems, including the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (Pramila Jayapal, my rep). We have two long-serving women Senators, including the senior most Democratic member (Patty Murray). We were one of the first states to legalize same sex marriage, cannabis, abortion, and autonomy in end of life choices. Way back when, women were given voting rights 40 years before the 19th Amendment. There’s a longstanding tradition of TRUE social libertarianism here — of the Mind Your Own Damn Business Do What You Want As Long As You’re Not Hurting Anyone Else style. The cost of living is high, but the climate, county, beer and music are great and you would be safe here without hiding and welcomed with open arms. ---

Massachusetts is a mixed bag – liberal in Boston and much – but by no means all – of the eastern half (especially north of Boston). Northampton, as noted above, is a safe haven, and it’s smack dab in amongst the five colleges area of the state. There are counties in the middle and southeast of the state that went Trump, though, based on maps of county-level vote It’s a darn expensive state to live in, though. New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine also have liberal areas where you’d be okay. Expense, alas, is also likely to be an issue in those areas as well. ---

I think my response here would be better suited for the Pit’s I Pit America thread. So I apologize for not putting it there instead. But I still believe that this is the reality we are looking at. But again, without actual suggestions, the truth as you see it still sounds a lot like “lay down and die.” This is not specific to you; this is something I’ve seen and disliked across multiple discussions in multiple areas. I think if that’s the message people want to communicate, they should at least be open about it. ---
