# How \*dare\* you smile for the cops after having sex with a boy?

No, not Wacko Jacko. [This guy](http://sex-offender.vsp.state.va.us/Cool-ICE/default.asp?Category=VSP&Service=VSP_SOF_Record&RRG=12067)! And the boy in question is [my GF’s nephew](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37506&highlight=nephew).
At least the authorities have him on their roster, except they don’t have his current address. He’s now living over in the next county and is being protected by his mother. The family is from India and not only did they use his mental status to get him off but the lawyer (also from India, I’m told) used cultural differences as a defense as well.
This is some totally fucked up shit, I tells ya.

I just don’t see how legal system that judges someone incompetent to stand trial can also judge them ok to be on the street, especially a sex offender, especially a sex offender who preys on children, and especially for an offense that has such a high rate of recidivism. I live in Arlington, and I have children. If that happened to my kid, that fucker’s remains would have to be identified with dental records…
There are not enough :mad:'s to express my feelings on this.

I’m confused. He was convicted according to the record, so how did he (oh dear there’s just no good way to say this) get off?

Darned if I know, maybe they got him to confess. The laywer reportedly said something about him not knowing what he did was wrong, based on his mental state and being from India. Sounds like a load of manure to us.

It happened about 3½ years ago; nephew and his father (GF’s half-brother) have since moved out of the area. You wouldn’t believe where he took the boy after finding out what this asshole did. Or maybe you would.

You didn’t exactly support yours except for some cryptic allusion to the DOJ, so I’m not terribly impressed. If you’re gonna ask for backup, and you have backup, PUOSU. But that’s beside the point.
After a cursory Google search, the first hit was

Oops! I posted too soon. Anyway, the study I cited DOES suggest that the rate for sex offenders is actually lower than other crimes, but given the abhorrent nature of the crime, I think that _comparative_ statistics aren’t really what’s at issue.

actually, it is relevant since you claimed that they were “high”. and it’s perfectly permissable for me to demand proof from you, since you made the original claim.

3.3% is **small** percentage. I’ll grant that we’d like it to be zero, but again, claiming that it’s a ‘high’ percentage is not supported by this data (which tracked over 4000 child molesters, 9000 other sex offenders).

it studied two thirds of the sex offenders released in the United States. (I will also note that convicted sex offenders are more likely to commit new sexual offense than other offenders, _however_, you need to realize that even convicted sex offenders are unlikely to commit new sex offenses. (so the ‘more likely’ still equates to less than 6% likely)
