I don’t think they had a telephone in the building. This was during the Depression and money was scarce. She had trouble enough getting books.
Interesting aside - while trying in vain to determine when the first telephones were used in Iowa schools I found out that by the early 1900s Iowa had the most telephones per capita in the US.
I also ran into a piece of pioneer history that talked about a man in northern IA who sought out a teaching certificate in the late 1800s and was handed a note that read, “If you are satisfied, I am satisfied.” That was his degree!
So I could stay on the New South Wales curriculum, and probably because I was old enough to be trusted with self-directed education. My brother, who is two years younger than me, enrolled in a local grammar school for the year.
I did finish my lessons in less than half of a day, and spent the rest of the day wandering around London. It’s wonderful how many free museums are in London.
