How did the counterculture change from mid-'68 to early '70?

I remember the Mad Magazine parody of it.

Give me time and I could make a case for the 50s ending in any year from 1957 through 1967 and for the 60s ending in any year from 1967 through 1980. Neither the 50s nor the 60s were ever a single thing and their numerous component parts can naturally have different start and end dates.

There are lumpers and splitters, but in the end the lumpers lump and wind up winning.

Well, in '74, Nixon resigned, and the Vietnam War ended the next year. It must have seemed like the end of an era.

 Still Life With Woodpecker! Tom Robbins must have been referencing that!
