Okay, I just ranted in the Pit about low-education whites. But at least I can comprehend why they might do something this ridiculous. This, however, from the 538 blog, is just utterly mystifying:

“Clinton is only at 65 percent among Latinos. Obama won 71 percent of them.”

What. The. Fuck.

So Trump’s got the power to mesmerize Hispanics also, along the line of the “Fifth Avenue shooting” bit? How on Earth can this be so? 😕

I heard he did better than average among black voters too.

I’m not sure. We will have to wait until the exit polls come out.

My family is all Filipino, and they are liberal as all hell. This election most of them voted for Trump, because illegal immigrants makes the job market more difficult on them. I think it is safe to assume that immigrants that get over here legally would be tired of losing jobs to people that broke the rules.

A lot of people are in an illegal/deportable situation at least part of the time while immigrating legally, thanks to how bad the US government is at things like giving people a way to track where they are in the process, incompatible regulations, or companies which use the system to blackmail their workers. Until that gets fixed, it’s pretty rich to say “I got through that ditch without being eaten by gators, now you’re not allowed to swim”.

You’re jogging my memory that although I’m stunned it has started to happen this quickly, I posted a thread just eighteen days ago titled [The 22nd Century Trump may be brown-skinned, named “Jorge”](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=808064). My concluding sentence:

FFS. People are so disappointing. ☹

But usually, what we call “white people” are defined by demographers as “non-Hispanic whites”.

you got a good point; Democrats got very arrogant over demographic movement in their direction. He lost the Hispanic vote by less than Romney. Romney lost it by 44%; Trump, [apparently has only lost](http://www.cnn.com/election/results/exit-polls/national/president) it by 36%. And I said to some people here that Democrats ought to watch out, given how Hispanics are [seeing themselves as white as time goes by](http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/22/upshot/more-hispanics-declaring-themselves-white.html).

Identity politics has a limit. Obama pushed it there.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: blacks, hispanics and women are not the tree hugging liberals you think they are. Whites do not have a corner on the conservative, religious ignorance market. Never have. Have you never actually known any blacks, hispanics and women? I have.

But for some Hispanic whites, whiteness is a bigger part of their identity than their grandparent whose last name ended in Z.

Because abuelo WAS “white”. By the definition in the home culture.

People in Latin America with more Spanish or other-european ancestors than Indian or black ones, call themselves “white”. And historically, acted accordingly, imposing their will on nonwhites.

I think I just saw exit polls saying Trump got 30% of the non-white vote.

Seeing how the non-white vote is mostly black and latino, that is shocking.

Where does this data comes from? Is it nationwide or does it only come from exit polling (which is not being done nationwide, AFAIK)? Because some of the Hispanic-heavy states won’t be getting exit polls, which means that Hispanic residents of Florida (i.e. Cuban-Americans) will probably be an outsized share of the Hispanic sample in exits.

Considering how much the early exit polls got wrong, I’m more a wait and see attitude.

You might have a point. One interesting stat I read years ago is that despite the fact that white men are the most likely to call themselves “very conservative”, they are also the demographic group most likely to self-label as “very _liberal_”. The former group is obviously much larger; but the point being that among a group of “very liberal” (“progressive”, “hard left”, “democratic socialist”) people, white men will actually make up a disproportionately high share.

Do such people even identify themselves as Hispanic on surveys though?

Hillary Clinton is a **woman**. Hispanic culture is extremely machismo-oriented, embracing traditional gender roles. _Of course_ they’re not keen on having a woman as CIC.

I know some people here think we have this “progressive” thing going where since we elected the first black president, we would then end up electing the first woman president, the first left-handed Muslim lesbian transgendered president, etc. all in rapid succession as part of the inevitable “march of progress”, and the issue of her gender wasn’t a big deal at all.

It just doesn’t work that way.

(and by the way, Bernie would have won. RIP Bernie)

Wow, really? Can you not just admit that not every minority suffers from group think? Maybe they think Trump better represents their interests?
