How did you get here?

Hey Nurobath, I’m trying to put together a Sac Dopefest. See MPSIMS… it’s in there somewhere.
Ahem…

Several years ago, a friend of mine was researching Skunk2 cams for his Civic. Somehow while googling and such, he came across here. He read a “Who would win, a Star Destroyer or the Enterprise” and sent me the link.

I’ve been here, internet access willing, pretty much ever since.

I was a lurker at the Bad Astronomy board, when the most famous troll there, a guy named Piper, mentioned that he had found a larger audience at the SDMB, where he had registered under the name seethruart. WHen I followed him here, I didn’t like the boards at first, but I started reading Cecil’s columns. Some time later I gave the boards another try and I haven’t left since.

It was jarbabyj who directed myself and a few others over here (superbee and lieu to name a couple). Actually, that reads badly, I would like to state that superbee and lieu are NOT a couple…honest.

I started reading the SD column many years ago in a little indie paper called “The Upwith Herald”. It was the first incantation of the same Charleston City Paper that Slainte mentioned. (This was about 1991, 1992.) I was fascinated; I saw the show, read the column online when I couldn’t get the paper.

I never paid much attention to the fact that there were message boards until I started this job. I’d been looking for something to do all day, as my job is not very labor-intensive. (My job is very “Office Space”-ish, I work for about 45 minutes a week.) One day, I finally clicked on the Threadspotting link, which was about Scylla’s diaper changing rules. I haven’t left since then.

Oh, I haven’t been reading the column online since 1991. I just realized that sounded odd. I started reading the column online about 3 years ago.

How did I get here? Well, when a man and a woman love each other very much, they do this special kiss…
I used to read the SD site and post on different forums. When I became annoyed with those forums I discovered the forums here.

I think I liked it better when you just lurked…

superbee, I need the car on Friday.

My wife’s a big fan of trivia, and I found the first Straight Dope book in the bookstore and gave it to her as a gift. Naturally, I read it too, and was hooked. When the Usenet group was being discussed and voted on, I picked it up there and read it. That’s where I found out about this board and web site, which I’ve been reading ever since.

I used to post to the SurvivorSucks.com message board during the first and second season of Survivor. They got bored with the show long before I did, but I kept going back to the message boards, hoping to find the same level of great posting and getting more and more disappointed. One of the links off to the left of the board was the SDMB, and planetsucks.com lost a poster forever!

I don’t know.

But I knew I should have taken a left at Albuquerque.

I’d always been a big fan of the books. So I figured I’d take a mosey over and see what it was like, figuring if it the site was filled with boring dorks I could always leave.

I’ve been here a year now

I’ve been a fan of the books for a long time, but back when it was on AOL, a few people who posted on message boards I hung around also posted on the SDMB. Eventually, I went over there based on their recommendations.

I just migrated along to the web boards when the time came, though I didn’t like them too much at first. Different crowd of people. I lurked for a long time before I bothered to post anything, but now I’m hooked.

Teleportation. I’d say I’ve got to improve my aim, but I think I’ll take this miss. (Freudian slip – that was nearly “mess”).

How did I get here?

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground

Same as it ever was…

I became an instant Cecil fan in 1988 when I got ahold of More of the Straight Dope (which is, IMHO, still the best of the bunch - I, to this day, still utilize the warm downy neck of a live goose). In 1999 I explcitly went looking for Cecil/TSD on the web and found this site. I’m a little embarrased by my post count (as, comparatively, an old-timer), but of course not ashamed of having put real life and young children first.

Later, I turned my brother Lawoot onto it, and he’s become a much more frequent participant.
