pbbth, Cricket did the same thing to me. I was going to warm her bottle and announced “I’m going to feed Cricket. Wait a minute…who’s Cricket?” Her name also lends itself well to nicknames - Cricker Kidder Cat, Crickums, CrickerBadCat, CrickerFatButt, etc.
I named my ferret Clyde, after Ginny’s cool cat boyfriend in Doonesbury.
When I was a kid and had a dog, we called him Jasper. No reason, I just liked the name.
My white-cap pionus parrot was named Kyoko after the lady in Maison Ikkoku.
My turtle is called Pilk from a turtle in a D&D Adventure we played once.
I call my leopard gecko Picante because that’s a great name for a lizard, plus his coloring and spots make him look spicy.
I forgot to mention my three leopard geckos. Their names are Progressive, Nationwide and AllState.
My dogs are called Andy and Katie - from “N.D” and “K.D”, which are short for “N__'s Dog” and “K___'s Dog”, N___ and K___ being my wife’s and mine names. This tradition being started by my sister, who named her dog “Seedy”, both because he was “C___'s Dog” and, well, he was pretty seedy.
Cats, on the other hand, when I have them, get “witch names” - Hepzibah, Mehitabel, that sort of thing. Haven’t had a cat since Mehitabel, though.
