Walked through all of Elementary and Middle School and like 95% of High School but once in a blue moon in later High School I would get rides from friends of friends that had cars.
Public transportation, aka the city bus.
I think I did make the 3 kilometer hike out to middle school in good weather sometimes, especially as it meant I could spend my bus fair on candy. If I hadn’t been in a special gifted program, then I’d have gone to the middle school only 400 meters away from our house, so that would definitely have been walking too.
My family rotated drop-off and pick-up duties with two other families that lived near us (school was about 20 miles away and didn’t offer busing), so I picked “driven by someone else” to give that category some love.
The grade school and Jr. High I went to were less than a mile away (uphill, one way). We could, and did, take the bus on bad-weather days, but it used to wind around the backroads getting other kids–on nice days, it was quicker and easier to walk.
Later on, my older brother either drove us to the high school, or I drove myself.
My school was right on the way to my father’s story, so he usually drove us. But it was only about a quarter mile away, so I started walking by the time I hit high school. I usually walked home.
I did take the bus home in grade school, but the route went past my house, stopped at every other stop, and then let me off at the last stop. I took to getting off a the first stop and walking home, which was only slightly shorter than walking directly from the school; once I realized that, I stopped taking the bus.
I voted school bus, because the question was limited to middle school (junior high, in my case), which were the only years I took the bus. I walked to elementary school and then again to high school, until I got a car and could drive. I don’t recall ever getting a ride to school, although I assume it must have happened once or twice.
Since our father refused to sign the form to get us free bus tickets, we walked the 3 1/2 miles.
For the first eight years, I walked 3 blocks to the local Catholic grade school. for high school, I took public transportation ( a bus) to a Catholic school that was about 10 miles away.
Walked. There were no buses. Everyone walked.
And we walked home for lunch. There were no other options. (early 70s)
My first elementary school was 5 blocks away. My best friend and I walked (alone, GASP) every day until 4th grade. The school for 5th grade was a close to a mile, so we’d walk to our original school and take the bus. Middle school was 5 blocks away in the other direction, so naturally, we walked.
I feel like that would get parents reported to protective services today, and it bugs me far more than it should.
Grade school - walked the two blocks.
Jr. High/High - took the bus
Second half of senior year in high school - drove
Young grade school - school bus.
Older grade school up to old enough to drive - bike.
Old enough to drive - car.
School was never really in walking range. It could certainly be done, but not in a reasonable time.
Where’s the option: Walked uphill 5 miles, both ways!
I voted “bus” but middle school years were odd. Mostly I walked or got driven. We moved around a lot and I went to a mix of Catholic and Public schools. Public schools, I took the bus. Catholic schools I got driven or walked, about 50/50.
Voted “took the school bus”, but only took it until 7th grade. Mom then had an issue with the bus driver (dropped me off at the wrong spot if I remember) then she just drove us to school.
Walked approx 1/2 mile to grade school (K-8) .
CTA bus/biked to HS.
Lived less than 2 miles from school which meant that I was eligible for a school bus but I didn’t use it after I missed it a couple of times and then walked and still managed to make it to school halfway through homeroom. I figured I can leave when I want to and still make it so why go through the hassle of waiting for a school bus, then finding a seat to sit in, etc. Fortunately I don’t remember getting caught in a rainstorm walking to school, but I did get soaked a couple of times walking back.
I checked on google maps. It would have been a six mile walk, each way, between my house and my school.
When I was a senior in High School, the school was many miles from my house. But I often walked home with my girlfriend just “because”. If the weather was good, it was a nice walk, and it was nice to have some alone time. We’d cut through the woods where possible, and cross over creeks and just enjoy nature.
Walked. And, depending on which way I went, it could have been uphill both ways.
Through 3 feet of snow.
Elementary School I walked. Junior High and High School at the public schools buses were available but I usually walked. In private school I drove, got rides, and occasionally walked.
