how do fighter pilots schlep their stuff to their duty station?

Same for the Air Force, at least at Flight Test. I believe Operational Bases are the same.

It was very useful in repelling pirates, I’m sure.

Not really adding anything that hasn’t been said but just adding my anecdote:

I was visiting Whidbey Island Naval Air Station last summer to check out my brother’s F18. There were 4 Air Force F15s that had overnighted there. While I was there, the F15 pilots arrived, did prechecks, and took off. Each pilot carried a bag/satchel probably about the size of an elementary school backpack that went into a compartment behind their seat. It would have been too small for even spare shoes, but I imagine it was enough for shaving kit, socks, and undies.

I just chimed in because it was pretty cool and even the Naval F18 crews were super engaged with the F15 visitors. It was fun to see that for all of the joking and one-upsmanship that goes on, when it comes down to business there was one team and they worked flawlessly to refuel and get them on their way.

There was even a flyover and seeming wing dip thank you after take off.
