# How do I find out my IP address?

I know about ipconfig (I’m using XP).
My catch is that I’m on a network, and I can’t access the server. Actually, more to the point I don’t know how to access the server since it’s running Linux; a friend of my mums set it up.
Running ipconfig will show my address on the network, but I want to know what the address to connect to my computer from another comp on the internet is; how do I find it out?

[Here](http://www.dslreports.com/whois) This will help you. Just click on the button and it will tell you your IP (or the IP of the network your on anyways.

Just an fyi… on XP
To do this without the help of a website, or if you need your specific address if you are a network
click Start | Run type “cmd”
a new window will open.
type “ipconfig/all”

I don’t see what the problem is. The IP address that you get when running ipconfig (or any other method) is the exact same IP address that you can use when connecting to that computer from another computer.

Or DHCP. Or a proxy server, sure. But none of the methods suggested would necessarily catch that, anyway. The term “network” is also odd. If you’re on the Internet, then you’re on a network. And what does the fact that the server is running Linux have to do with it? You connect to a Linux server every time you search on Google.

**Terminus Est** : Yes, but it’s far easier to access your Linksys router and find your “real” IP than get into a Linux server you didn’t set up and don’t know how to use.
As for reasons, if you’re playing a multiplayer game with some friends, chances are fair that you’ll have to know that IP.
P.S.: If the server is acting as a router (prob’ly why it’s there… it’s why my Linux machine is here), you don’t _have_ an IP anyone can connect to. If I wanna play warcraftIII with my friend w/o using Battlenet, I have to forward the port it uses (6112) to the machine on my network that’s running the game. If you run into problems this way, you might wanna ask whoever set it up for some help.

OK, here’s a post without a quote. Go ahead and post my IP; I’m not very big on anonymity. But I’m quite sure you can’t do it; a _lot_ of the people who post here would be quite shocked to learn otherwise. This “blocking device” you speak of is probably just the bbBoard software operating normally… 🙂
On the other hand, my e-mail address is in my profile and you could probably find out my IP from that with an educated guess or two. So even if you come up with my IP, that still won’t prove a lot.

Sorry Martin I could not trace any ISP address, the SDMB is unlike any other I’ve been to.
I can tell you that your post with my quote was Number 3,959,219, and your second post was 3,959,419 but whether or not that was this year or since the SDMB started is hidden.

The SDMB does not block the IP except based on permissions. The SDMB is run using PHP scripts and a thing called a “database” which, depending on the permissions of the person accessing it, may or may not display the IP address in the post.
IP addresses, contrary to what people think, are not confidential information, nor are they considered privledged information. I am continually amazed at the people who feel that an IP address is like a credit card number or social security number. The air of mystique around them is actually very silly.
Oh yeah - my IP is **65.69.77.33**. No secret there. My “www” link takes you there via my URL.
