You two agree - he was saying that the don’t pass bet gives up a very slight edge to the house, but you’re the asshole at the table if you bet it. It’s not worth it if your goal is to have fun.
Curt - that’s not what he said. He said you give the house an advantage over a similar pass line bet, which is incorrect.
You should also reread my #36, the math on “3 rolls to settle a bet” is pretty straightforward with the 29.6% figure from Sam Stone’s cite.
Yes, penny slots. I can’t think of any other game where you can place such small bets.
And there’s a potential for a large payoff – two or three hundred times your original bet!
At which point, you will lose your ass.
Believing that a random occurrence can have cycles of “hot” and “cold” is something the house loves you to go along with. In a random sequence there will always be periods with outcomes that are not adhering to the median. If you take a penny and flip it ten times and recod the results, and do that again ten times, the number of trials where the outcome is 50/50 will be in the minority. Was the penny “hot” when it came up heads 7 out of 10? In fact, you would be more surprised if it came out 50/50 on all ten trials.
Whatever I said, I did believe that the pass line was a better bet for the player than the don’t pass. Ignorance fought. However, I can’t see how that .05% makes people want to be the asshole rooting for the other table players to lose. Of course, I don’t see why people want to go to a party and stand in the corner mumbling to themselves either.
Yeah, I had missed that when I posted earlier so I tried to figure it myself. I love doing stuff like that, so when I saw your “straightforward” comment I thought I must have missed an easy way of solving it instead of the tedious recursive one that I came up with. But alas, Mr Wizard did it similarly to how I did, but I didn’t take it to the extent of a spreadsheet for a near-exact calculation. I just scribbled on a piece of paper, and found that the answer wasn’t converging that quickly.
I just did it my way with a spreadsheet, and my answer was converging to exactly 3.4 rolls per inning, which would be 29.4%. Hmmm I’ll have to look at that later.
If your goal is 1) to gamble away your money and 2) do it as slowly as possible, then you should find the smallest possible bet and bet only once. By definition, there can be no slower way to gamble away your money.
For example, if there is a slot machine that accepts pennies, bet one penny and never play again. Of course, the equation changes if you have additional goals, such as “enjoyment”, but those were not specified in the OP.
Mrs. Dvl and I lovvvvvveeee the Craps table. I think the above description of blackjack:funeral :: craps:party is spot on. We’ve played about with varying strategies e.g., one kept to minimums on the line while the other maxes out odds. In general (given the swings of probability) we last about the same amount of time.
A huge second to this. Especially if you are drinking, craps remains relatively simple to play. In blackjack you can get so far by remembering that statistically, 4/13 cards will be a ten, but you have to know a lot more than that to play good “basic” strategy.
No, no relation. Had I known about Sam I would have chosen a different User Name as I am a raging liberal. It refers to Jesus’ speech about “He who is without sin cast the first stone.” I’m waiting for Jesus to cast the first stone so I can start piling on. It’s a long wait.
Not really… you’ll just do no better than you would have otherwise done. You don’t do any worse by believing in hot or cold streaks.
Speaking as the occasional asshole here (:D), why are *you *rooting for *me *to lose? If there are five people playing Don’t Pass and one playing Pass, who’s the asshole? It’s not my fault they’ve pitted us against each other. Don’t hate the player, hate the game.
It’s just like going into my hometown sport’s bar and wearing our hated rival’s jersey. There’s nothing inherently wrong with it but it won’t get you any drinks either.
Logically, we should ALL be betting Don’t Pass and I wouldn’t have a problem with that either. I’m not sure how the casinos would feel about that. There’s probably a reason that the pass line is so much larger than don’t pass.
If we all switch to Don’t Pass and you switch to Pass, I’d say you’re the asshole. Or at least just being contrary.
Ha ha ha. . . I love all the comments about the don’t bettors in craps.
My Vegas crowd of friends all treat don’t bettors as lifeforms slightly below slime molds but below piles of feces.
I agree with KRM-- regardless of the odds, betting Don’t Pass at a crowded table is like showing up at an Eagles game in a Giants jersey.
That said, muttrox is correct-- if everyone played Don’t Pass, then the pass line bettors would be the assholes. Alas, this is just the price you pay to maintain social harmony in a discordant world
If it were me, I’d be hitting the sports book to put $2 on the Audi in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Mention of sports book reminded me of another pretty good option, Keno. The odds are horrible but you sit in a nice, usually more quiet and dimly-lit area of the casino in big comfortable chairs, drink free drinks, and can play 1.00 every 10 or 15 minutes. Its basically like being able to sit in a comfortable chair and buy a 1.00 ticket to a 100,000.00 lottery every 15 minutes.
I can’t think of a bet that lasts longer than some of the seasonal bets at the sports book, but I don’t think that is what the OP is really looking for.
