# How do people start programming C or C++?

There are some real differences between C++ and Java. Unfortunately, I left my OO book at home, but I remember one example. Given an overloaded function name in a parent and a child class, they don’t resolve the overloading the same way. There are other, real differences between these languages as well, but I don’t remember them off the top of my head.

Yes. Here’s one [how-to book](http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0137491859/202-6607056-0570208) on it. But it looks like book got bad reviews.

I’ve written a thumbnail image control, a specialized grid control, a text preview control, and other controls, all with VB5.
