How Do They Correct A Headstone?

Or put the wrong middle initial, as Gary Mitchell did when he made a headstone that said “James R. Kirk”? *

  • I’m being facetious here. Before any one points it out, I know it was a pilot episode and Kirk’s middle initial hadn’t been established as “T” until the series was underway.

I inderstand that they fixed this big, expensive typo by redoing the whole stone.

God, I know I just woke up and all, but I just cannot find it. Where’s the “carve-o”?

Line 3.

Oh, good lord, nobody’s going to notice that with all the other vertical stuff in that word.

If you’re ever at the Met in NYC, you can see that they’ve corrected several of the engraved stones next to the stairway that list the donors.

IIRC, they engraved dates at the top of each one, and then clearly filled and fixed it. Wish I could find a photo online.

Not a headstone, and not strictly a typo: When the Champaign, Illinois Fire Department building became the Police Department building, they simply carved a semicircle to connect the horizontal lines of the “F” in “CFD” to turn it into a “P.” You can still see the old serifs from the “F” in the “P.”

Not to suggest that stonemasons as a profession aren’t well educated, but I’d be willing to bet that the person in question mastered that changing-an-F-to-another-letter skill after a lot of practice in school.
