Well, there are different types of felting. If you wanted to call dreadlocks “wet felted”, I guess you wouldn’t be completely wrong, but the process of felting, even wet felting is not how locks are formed. So, while the term felted might mean the same as matted, the process is completely different. So Dreadlocks are not felted hair. But the idea most have about felting is that a needle is used to sculpt the fibers. Dreadlocks do not form from sticking them with needles. This process destroys locks and breaks up the hairs into tiny pieces. You will end up with something that looks like a dreadlock, but is dangerously unhealthy and stiff. Those who felt their locks or crochet them, constantly feel like they need to fix the loose hairs that they caused themselves. Both of these methods weaken locks between 30 and 70%.
