The stuff you by (soft drinks) tastes terrible…I am wondering how the real old time birch beer was made-was it a malt-type, alcoholic fermented brew? Are there any makers today for the real think?

Can I ask what brands you’ve tried? I had quite a few different kinds out east (Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire) and rather enjoyed them.
Don’t remember who made it, but I even had a diet one at [Louis Lunch](http://www.louislunch.com/) that was pretty good too.
Birch Beer soda is definitely an acquired taste, though.
