Ed’n’burra, but, since I answered the poll before reading the thread, I clicked “Edinburrow” as the closest to that. (burra, burro, whatever) U.S. ---

_I_ pronounce it “edin-berg”. 🙂 I am quite prepared to admit that that is not how residents of Edinburgh pronounce it. But since I have never been there, never met anyone from there, or even heard a resident pronounce the name, that’s almost all I have to go on, along with the fact that the name of the nearest well-known town with a comparable name, Pittsburgh, is pronounced “pitts-berg”. On the other hand, two near-by comparable towns to where I am now, Scarborough and Peterborough", I pronounce “scarburrow” and “peederburl”, respectively. There is no consistency. ---

I pronounce my hometown as “Ed’n’burra”. Never given it any thought how it name is said until today. ---

I guess the Edinbruh one would be closest, but the d is almost mute. From Spain, spent one year in Glasgow and one in Edinburgh. In fact, I did ask in these boards something along the lines of “how come you weirdos write -burgh and say -bruh? The consonants are inverted! Aaaaaargh!” (but I got calmer). ---

I have never heard Peterborough pronounced like that, not living on Oshawa, not living in Peterborough (while attending Trent)…always…just like it’s spelt - Peter Burrow, unless slurred a bit, which could make it peeduh burrah - definitely no l. ---

There is no consistency. I assume these are American Scarboroughs and Peterboroughs from that, not the English ones? The originals are very much Scarbruh and Petersbruh. Oh, and just to reiterate to everyone (not that anyone read it) I’m totally conflating burrow and burra in the poll, as opposed to the single-syllable “bruh”. It’s more a one or two syllable poll, which never even considered “berg”. I should start another poll, because the burra people have selected “other”. Which conflates them with the “berg” people more than the “burrow” people. Worst poll ever. Ah well. The correct poll should ask how many syllables “burgh” has. ---

I pronounce it Ed’n’burra too. I live on an Edinburgh Rd in a very non-Scottish place in Canada; while I would love to pronounce it Embra I think that would result in a lot of misdirected mail. ---
