How do you see movies these days? (poll)

  1. at a theater for first-run showings

Only very rarely, if it’s something I really want to see and/or needs to be seen on a big screen. Let say 5%

  1. online rental source (Netflix and others)

Otherwise, I’ll put it in my Netflix queue. 95%.

The rest, 0%. I don’t have cable anymore or watch external TV, and haven’t been to Blockbluster in ages.

If I really like a movie and intend to watch it multiple times, I’ll buy the DVD, but I won’t buy a movie unseen.

First run in theaters: 10%
Netflix: 40%
On Demand: 50%

I prefer Fern Forest’s #/yr distinction over percentages. Further, I am assuming this means “see for the first time.” So the fact that I watch two or three movies per week that I already own, or that I’ll watch a few dozen movies per year if I catch them on TV and like them, does not count. I can tell others do not take the same definition.

  1. at a theater for first-run showings - 3-4 per year
  2. at a theater for reruns - None
  3. premium cable channel (Showtime, HBO, Cinemax, etc.) - 1-2 per year, assuming travel for work (do not have at home)
  4. On Demand cable TV free movies - None
  5. rental store (Blockbuster and others) - 1-2 per year
  6. online rental source (Netflix and others) 20-30 per year
  7. Pay-per-view cable TV (including On Demand pay-for showings) None
  8. commercial channel TV (including AMC and the like) 10-20 per year
  9. free non-commercial TV channel (TCM, for example) 1-2 per year
  10. Purchased movies 1-2 per year (here, if we say that rewatching movies applies, it’s probably two or three per week. Familiar entertainment is great background noise)
  11. Airplane None

And I’m adding a new category:
12) Movies owned by friends/relatives (whether borrowed or watched together) - 2-3 per year

  1. at a theater for first-run showings About once a month, if something comes out that I’m particularly interested in.

  2. at a theater for reruns 0%.

  3. premium cable channel (Showtime, HBO, Cinemax, etc.) 0%. These people monitor my cable use, and whenever I have a pay channel, they immediately quit showing anything good.

  4. On Demand cable TV free movies 0%.

  5. rental store (Blockbuster and others) Occasionally – about as often as I actually go to the movies.

  6. online rental source (Netflix and others) Ain’t got it.

  7. Pay-per-view cable TV (including On Demand pay-for showings) Very seldom. Usually, by the time something I want to see shows up, I’ve either rented it or seen it at the theatre.

  8. commercial channel TV (including AMC and the like)

  9. free non-commercial TV channel (TCM, for example) These two account for most of my movie intake. I liked AMC better when they didn’t have commercials, though…

  1. First run theater 6-10 per year
  2. Rental store 6-10 per year
  3. Netflix 120-200 per year
  4. Purchases 6-10 per year
  5. Bittorrent 6-10 per year
    And I’m adding category
  6. Public Library 20-40 per year
  1. at a theater for first-run showings 33%
  2. at a theater for reruns Including revival houses: 24%
  3. premium cable channel (Showtime, HBO, Cinemax, etc.) 0%
  4. On Demand cable TV free movies 8%
  5. rental store (Blockbuster and others) 6%
  6. online rental source (Netflix and others) 0%
  7. Pay-per-view cable TV (including On Demand pay-for showings) 4%
  8. commercial channel TV (including AMC and the like) 10%
  9. free non-commercial TV channel (TCM, for example) 15%

All told, I average about 3-4 movies/week (with more than half occurring in the theater). I operate on the general assumption that if I don’t see it in the first run, I’m very unlikely to see it at all.

  1. at a theater for first-run showings 1%

  9. purchased (DVD or VHS oe whatever) 5%

You left out another option:

11: Borrowed from the public library. This is were I get most of the movies I watch, usually on videotape but sometimes on DVD. Most of the rest are on cable TV, a few are rented DVD’s. Maybe twice a year I’ll go see a film at a theater. Very rarely I’ll buy a tape or DVD.

  16. 0.1%

  17. 0.1% (see below)

I’ve never used Pay Per View. That should be zero.
