**Iampunha,** if you loved your PBJ (Penalty Box for Jesus), you’re gonna love this (but maybe it’s Old News for you, I dunno. I don’t get out of the house much.) The Better Half stumbled on this website today at lunch while he was looking for something on Al Gore. All I can say is, “Golly.”

Hmm, a Search with Quick Verse under “God hates” turns up the following:

> [@](#):
>
> Deu 16:21,22 Do not set up any wooden Asherah pole beside the altar you build to the LORD your God, and do not erect a sacred stone, for these the LORD your God hates.

Nope, no mention of “fags” there. Maybe it’s under “the LORD hates”…

> [@](#):
>
> Deu 12:31 You must not worship the LORD your God in their way, because in worshiping their gods, they do all kinds of detestable things the LORD hates. They even burn their sons and daughters in the fire as sacrifices to their gods.
>
> Prov 6:16-19 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

Well, shoot, I know it must be in here somewhere. Look under “the LORD detests”…

> [@](#):
>
> Prov 3:32 for the LORD detests a perverse man but takes the upright into his confidence.
>
> Prov 11:20 The LORD detests men of perverse heart but he delights in those whose ways are blameless.
>
> Prov 12:22 The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful.
>
> Prov 15:8 The LORD detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but the prayer of the upright pleases him.
>
> Prov 15:9 The LORD detests the way of the wicked but he loves those who pursue righteousness.
>
> Prov 15:26 The LORD detests the thoughts of the wicked, but those of the pure are pleasing to him.
>
> Prov 16:5 The LORD detests all the proud of heart.
>
> Prov 17:15 Acquitting the guilty and condemning the innocent-- the LORD detests them both.
>
> Prov 20:10 Differing weights and differing measures-- the LORD detests them both.
>
> Prov 20:23 The LORD detests differing weights, and dishonest scales do not please him.

Pastor Phelps must have a different translation.

And possibly one explanation for why your PBJ hates Al Gore so much–according to Rev. Phelps (and I assume the rest of the Religious Right), Big Al’s a turncoat, he used to be “anti-fag” back in 1988.

excuse this rude quote from the above referenced site but this got me:

Um, and that same semen is put into your wife too, into an opening with a very large mucous membrane, which will absorb those same germs. How can they be so blind and ignorant? ::naive sigh::

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, this is the most awful website I have ever been too. How can anyone go to that church and show their faces in public? I would be humiliated beyond all belief to say, “Yeah, I go that church that hosts [http://www.godhatesfags.com](http://www.godhatesfags.com)”

I feel like I need a moral shower - so much hate…

Ah, but BunnyGirl, what you’re missing is that to these people, a vagina is a filthy dirty place, too, so it’s OK for all that germ-infested semen to get put in there. And besides, then it’s the woman’s problem, and doesn’t the Bible say that the woman sinned first? So obviously, being turned into nothing more than a walking receptacle for filthy semen is her punishment for her sin.

Aren’t you glad I explained this to you? Makes you glad to be female, don’t it?

And the people who go to that church would probably tell you they’re DARN PROUD to belong to Rev. Phelps’ church, because, naturally, all the decent people who find him and his website revolting have long since voted with their feet and are down the street with the heathen Presbyterians…

First off, I am a lover of all people. Individuals should do what makes them happy–whatever it may be–so long as it does not affect others adversely.

Second, I believe in the full rights of Gay men and Women.
I know I’m risking criticism but…

There is NO proof (yet) that proves homosexuality is an irreversible trait, and as such allows Gay men and Women to state simply “that’s the way I’ve always been.”

No proof to the contrary either.

We still do not know if it is a physical (chemical) or mental trait. Or a combination of both.

It is possible that Gay men and Women are, simply, Gay men and Women. They were born that way.

It is also possible that Gay men and Women have chosen their lifestyle. That, of course, is perfectly fine and should be encouraged if that is the case.

It is also possible that it is a mental sickness. I’m sorry but it is possible. There may have been emotional circumstances in one’s life (very early or late) that could have directed an individual to BECOME homosexual.

Reasons for this may be coping with, I don’t know, rejection, rape and molestation; or maybe thoughts of self-inadequacy (when interacting with a member of the opposite sex)

Perhaps all of these are true in varying combinations.

But…

Is homosexuality wrong? No!
Is it a sin? Certainly not!
Is that ignorant poster a friggin’ goof? Yes!
I apologize if I’ve offended anyone, I am only searching for the truth. Feel free to tear me apart if you feel it’s necessary. Please be scholarly.

Hi stifferd,

You made a series of statements. Please note that you didn’t ask any questions. You made **statements**. Can you substantiate them? Do you feel that you’re an expert on this subject? Are you aware that a lot of scientific research has been done on these very subjects? Are you aware that the American Psychological Association has taken positions on most of these issues, with plenty of scientific research to back up its positions?

Just one small example.

> [@](#):
>
> \*Originally posted by stifferd \*
> **…There is NO proof (yet) that proves homosexuality is an irreversible trait…**

It depends on what you mean by “proof. “ There’s a mountain of scientific evidence that homosexuality is irreversible, and little or no proof to the contrary. Even “reparation therapy” groups (the guys who claim to be able to “cure” homosexuality) admit that all they can do is help a willing homosexual “function” as a heterosexual (i.e., become capable of sexual relations with the opposite sex). But the homosexual will still continue to have homosexual desires–nothing can be done about that. The “reparation therapy” groups admit this.

At this point in time, it’s pretty much accepted as an axiom by anyone who cares anything about the subject that homosexuality is not reversible in any true, meaningful sense of the word. The only people claiming that homosexuality is truly reversible are hard-core homophobes.

So what’s your story, stifferd? What’s your basis for implying that homosexuality might in fact be reversible? Are you just ignorant of all the research on the subject, or are you aware of that research but deliberately ignoring it?

And so it goes with the rest of your post. Much of what you said is out of line with current scientific research.

If you’re just ignorant of the research, then why are you making **statements**? Why not **ask** about all the issues you raised?

If you’re really “searching for the truth,” why don’t you take the first step and do some reading on the subject? Search up Esprix’s “Ask the Gay Guy” message threads on this message board and read through them. Use the search function on the Straight Dope Message Board to search up other threads on the subject. Go to the American Psychological Association’s web site and read up on what they have to say about homosexuality. Go to the gay and lesbian issues portion of your bookstore and pick up some books on the subject.

I sympathize with what you said about homosexuality not being wrong or a sin. But much of what you stated elsewhere in your post was, in fact, incorrect in one manner or another. As such, I’m curious what basis you had for posting all those statements. I’m not pissed at you and I’m not trying to stop you from posting. I’m not assuming that you’re hostile to gays and lesbians, and I’m not feeling hostile toward you in any way. In fact, as a pro-gay-rights poster myself, I would welcome a live-and-let-live ally like you.

Mainly I’m just curious. Are you just in the habit of posting personal opinion as fact, or do you really think you have a solid, factual basis for everything you posted?

Oops. A quick correction to my last post. I said:

> [@](#):
>
> It depends on what you mean by “proof." There’s a mountain of scientific evidence that homosexuality is irreversible, and little or no proof to the contrary.[

I meant to say:

It depends on what you mean by “proof." There’s a mountain of scientific evidence that homosexuality is irreversible, and little or no **evidence** to the contrary.

* * *

By the way, my point in making this statement is that evidence of something can be overwhelming on one side of a debate, but partisans on the other side of the debate will insist that they will only accept “proof,” and it’s not “proof” until it’s a nice little package that they can hold in their hand.

Some debates will never be ultimately be “proved” one way or the other. But that doesn’t mean that it’s okay to ignore the mountain of evidence on one side of the debate.

One thing that cracked me up about Phelps’s website is that he was talking about different churches, and how they are about homosexuality.

On the Catholic church, he said, “practicing homosexuals cannot become clergy members.” A big D’UH!!! Practicing HETEROsexuals cannot become clergy members either (if you mean priests and the like.) So that point was kind of stupid.
In the Catholic church, the priests and all that are CELIBATE!!!

Bisexual? Polyamorous? 😉

>
> No proof to the contrary either.

The [American Psychological Association](http://www.apa.org/pubinfo/answers.html) disagrees with you (and after 35 years of research into homosexuality, I’m inclined to accept them as an authority on the subject):

> [@](#):
>
> **Can Therapy Change Sexual Orientation?**
>
> No. Even though most homosexuals live successful, happy lives, some homosexual or bisexual people may seek to change their sexual orientation through therapy, sometimes pressured by the influence of family members or religious groups to try and do so. The reality is that homosexuality is not an illness. It does not require treatment and is not changeable. However, not all gay, lesbian, and bisexual people who seek assistance from a mental health professional want to change their sexual orientation. Gay, lesbian, and bisexual people may seek psychological help with the coming out process or for strategies to deal with prejudice, but most go into therapy for the same reasons and life issues that bring straight people to mental health professionals.
>
> **What About So-Called “Conversion Therapies”?**
>
> Some therapists who undertake so-called conversion therapy report that they have been able to change their clients’ sexual orientation from homosexual to heterosexual. Close scrutiny of these reports however show several factors that cast doubt on their claims. For example, many of the claims come from organizations with an ideological perspective which condemns homosexuality. Furthermore, their claims are poorly documented. For example, treatment outcome is not followed and reported overtime as would be the standard to test the validity of any mental health intervention.
>
> The American Psychological Association is concerned about such therapies and their potential harm to patients. In 1997, the Association’s Council of Representatives passed a resolution reaffirming psychology’s opposition to homophobia in treatment and spelling out a client’s right to unbiased treatment and self-determination. Any person who enters into therapy to deal with issues of sexual orientation has a right to expect that such therapy would take place in a professionally neutral environment absent of any social bias.

> [@](#):
>
> We still do not know if it is a physical (chemical) or mental trait. Or a combination of both.

They disagree with you there, too:

> [@](#):
>
> **What Causes a Person To Have a Particular Sexual Orientation?**
>
> There are numerous theories about the origins of a person’s sexual orientation; most scientists today agree that sexual orientation is most likely the result of a complex interaction of environmental, cognitive and biological factors. In most people, sexual orientation is shaped at an early age. There is also considerable recent evidence to suggest that biology, including genetic or inborn hormonal factors, play a significant role in a person’s sexuality.
>
> In summary, it is important to recognize that there are probably many reasons for a person’s sexual orientation and the reasons may be different for different people.

> [@](#):
>
> It is possible that Gay men and Women are, simply, Gay men and Women. They were born that way.
>
> It is also possible that Gay men and Women have chosen their lifestyle. That, of course, is perfectly fine and should be encouraged if that is the case.

Not only do the experiences of gay men and lesbians contradict the “it’s a choice” theory (it ain’t), but, again, the APA disagrees:

> [@](#):
>
> **Is Sexual Orientation a Choice?**
>
> No, human beings can not choose to be either gay or straight. Sexual orientation emerges for most people in early adolescence without any prior sexual experience. Although we can choose whether to act on our feelings, psychologists do not consider sexual orientation to be a conscious choice that can be voluntarily changed.

> [@](#):
>
> It is also possible that it is a mental sickness. I’m sorry but it is possible. There may have been emotional circumstances in one’s life (very early or late) that could have directed an individual to BECOME homosexual.
>
> Reasons for this may be coping with, I don’t know, rejection, rape and molestation; or maybe thoughts of self-inadequacy (when interacting with a member of the opposite sex)

Gotcha on that one, too:

> [@](#):
>
> **Is Homosexuality a Mental Illness or Emotional Problem?**
>
> No. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other mental health professionals agree that homosexuality is not an illness, mental disorder or an emotional problem. Over 35 years of objective, well-designed scientific research has shown that homosexuality, in and itself, is not associated with mental disorders or emotional or social problems. Homosexuality was once thought to be a mental illness because mental health professionals and society had biased information.
>
> In the past the studies of gay, lesbian and bisexual people involved only those in therapy, thus biasing the resulting conclusions. When researchers examined data about these people who were not in therapy, the idea that homosexuality was a mental illness was quickly found to be untrue.
>
> In 1973 the American Psychiatric Association confirmed the importance of the new, better designed research and removed homosexuality from the official manual that lists mental and emotional disorders. Two years later, the American Psychological Association passed a resolution supporting the removal.
>
> For more than 25 years, both associations have urged all mental health professionals to help dispel the stigma of mental illness that some people still associate with homosexual orientation.

> [@](#):
>
> Perhaps all of these are true in varying combinations.

No, not really.

> [@](#):
>
> Is homosexuality wrong? No!
> Is it a sin? Certainly not!
> Is that ignorant poster a friggin’ goof? Yes!

On these points, we can agree.

> [@](#):
>
> I apologize if I’ve offended anyone, I am only searching for the truth. Feel free to tear me apart if you feel it’s necessary. Please be scholarly.

I hope I was adequately so.

Hey, Duck, you know what I love about this story that seems to get missed all the time? Paul said that the woman was _deceived_ and committed sin and then led Adam into sin. To me, that means that, yes, Eve was deceived, hoodwinked, etc, but Adam MADE A CONSCIOUS DECISION. 😃

Just an alternate viewpoint.

BWAHHAHAHAHAHAHA! Sorry, but that was a good one. Trust me, the Catholic church would rather PAY OFF families than get rid of a priest. My childhood priest molested over 10 boys in our parish. He’s now serving on the marriage tribunal. (And the priest after him fucked a woman and broke up her marriage. No wonder I hate the church so much.)

Yes, and I personally believe more priests are gay than not for that reason. To the best of my knowlege, the Catholic church will not refuse a celibate homosexual from becoming a priest. However, I could be wrong. 🙂

Sorry Guys and Gals.

I fucked up.

First of all, I never really meant to imply that homosexuality was an illness. For that I apologize.

Most of my statements (which, after reading my post, I found WERE presented as being fact and not simply as my opinion)had been based on personal experience.

I had a friend years ago (in highschool) who was struggling with his identity, sexuality, etc. He was unsure about who he was (and what he preffered) and, for lack of a better explanation, went through a homosexual “phase”

The last time I spoke with him he had a girlfriend.

This is what still confuses me.
I know now, that (if I was unsure about something) I should have asked first, rather than blurted out what I did.

But I’m a young punk and I think I know everything.

So there.

Anyway, I’ve read up on the issue and, admittedly, I knew alot less than I thought I did. And there are still alot of questions.

But that’s another thread…

Oh yeah, and concerning the OP: that guy is still a

I have the poster in question (on my other MB) PBed so I do not see anything by him. He hasn’t posted in a while anyway.

What finally got me was him using the rationale that a poster was female to explain (to himself) a comment she made that as far as a lot of us could see had less than nothing to do with gender.

Hell, she might as well have been talking about the sun setting.

Good post, **stifferd**. Thanks for addressing the points that I raised in my own post. I understand much better where you were coming from now. No harm done and no bad feelings on anyone’s part, I hope.

If you want to inquire further about cases like your high school friend, try posting about it in Esprix’s “Ask the Gay Guy III!” message thread. Just click on the link in Esprix’s signature line, a little higher on this page. Quite likely the posters in that thread can give you some additional insights into cases like that.

I look forward to seeing more of your posts around the message board. Welcome to the SDMB! All the best!
