“Chauffeur” is French; the literal meaning is “one that heats,” originally used to describe men whose job it was to stoke steam engines.

It took me a very long time to spell it correctly. The second u messed me up every time.

There are plenty of French words with that same ending: chanteur, penseur, masseur, derailleur come to mind.

Thanks for sharing the etymology. I’ve known the word (and it’s correct spelling) for a long time, but for some reason it never occurred to me to dig up its origin.

“Butler” is derived from Old French _botellier_ meaning “the guy who takes care of the wine bottles.”

Some of these patterns are very rare or unique (such as ⟨gh⟩ for /p/, ⟨ph⟩ for /v/, ⟨i⟩ for /ɑː/). An ellipsis (⟨…⟩) stands for an intervening consonant.

It’s basically equivalent to the “er” ending in english. A baker is someone who bakes. Un chanteur (singer) est quelqu’un qui chante (sings).

One that has migrated to english is "connaisseur, which is basically “know-er”.

One who does a thing for the love of the thing. Rather than for money.

So, sort of, “lover”. Probably don’t say that to your lover, though.

That’s also where we get the name for a chafing dish, which keeps food warm at a buffet.

In Russian it’s spelled “Pikov Andropov.”
