Yep, I check profiles myself. Sometimes a screen name gives it away. I even from time to time remember something the poster has said in a different thread that solved the minor mystery. (Giraffe is a very tall man, is a good example. Very tall IIRC) Most people guess Osip is a male name. Asking, is also an easy less time consuming way. Osip ---

Hmmm … London\_Calling posted the same question to an unrelated thread a few weeks ago, and I answered that I didn’t know how I did it, but I’d hardly ever been wrong. Since then, I’ve come to the sad conclusion that this is not true, and in the absence of other cues I’m wrong about half the time. I _do_ have a pretty good memory for what people have said in the past, so if a poster has mentioned his or her sex once I’ll usually remember it forever. Oddly enough, only a few people have ever mistaken me for a male, even though there are no obvious clues in my screen name or profile. ---

male/female ? Alright, that sounds straight as the equation displays a man on top of a female. Missionary position? Okay, lets see, best way is to ask the person. Of course, ‘Ask The Gay Guy’ would indicate male/male. But most are male/female. ---

I don’t worry about it, generally. Why should I need to know? I’ll flirt with most anyone I find entertaining - gender isn’t a problem. Of course, some posters mention it (either in their usernames or in conversation) - in those cases, it’s obviously pretty easy to tell if you can read. Then again, I’ve been campaigning for gender-neutral personal pronouns for a couple of decades now. I quite often find need for one IRL, much less on the 'Net.
