DVDs on my computer; I don’t own a TV. Starting to switch over to Blu-Ray.
I mostly watch dvds. When I watch movies over the internet it is through free services like Hulu.
I don’t do pirated stuff but that is downloaded these days so the poll is confusing that it is in with tv.
We have a gorgeous, huge new Library. They have a DVD section with thousands of movies (including new releases). We get all of our movies there.
We have about 500 DVDs, perhaps 50 BR and HD-DVDs, and still watch many of those that aren’t just archival or reference stuff. But by far most of our home viewing is via streaming - free-ish via Hulu and Netflix and Amazon Prime, and PPV through Vudu.
I bought the Mrs the fourth season of Game of Drones (I’m very meh on it, myself) as a delayed Xmas present, and the BR disc set with an Ultraviolet code was cheaper than HD streaming. So we watched the first episode from disc, but will probably watch out the run on Vudu and donate the discs to the library (which was where we got the first three seasons from).
Short answer, though, and the likely 99% option for the future, is “streaming.”
I’m not really a “rewatcher” so the idea of having a DVD (or whatever your storage medium may be) library has never resonated with me. Never got it.
I love, love, love streaming. I honestly can’t tell much difference when it comes to sound or picture quality, either, so HD/surround/widescreen discussion is all just Charlie Brown teacher talking to me.
yes it is. they have the collection on better quality Beta.
DVDs - although I have tired a little streaming since I upgraded my internet. But I don’t see that ever replacing hard copies in my life.
The kinetoscope finally failed, huh.
We stream via Netflix and Amazon Prime.
I only own a handful of Blu-Ray DVD’s (very special movies), but I rent a steady stream of them from Netflix.
I’d say it’s mostly Netflix/Amazon today. Sometimes VOD. Rarely I’ll buy the DVD for a movie/shows that I really really like.
Mainly DVR from TCM. I also check out DVDs from the library. Very rarely I will stream from Amazon Prime because I have only an iPad and it seems so sad to watch a movie on a tiny screen. Yet I am not interested in getting any sort of box gizmo so I can watch streamed stuff on my TV.
Same here. Don’t own any movies. I watch on HBO or Netflix. Or DVR from some network.
Huh. I prefer to stream movies on my iPad. I use ear-buds and can walk around the house, do laundry, etc while watching.
The difference between SD/stereo and HD/5.1 is pretty pronounced. It just may not be worth any extra cost to undemanding viewers. We pay for most TV shows in SD - they’re just not worth the extra cost of HD or HD+.
Most stuff on “free” streaming - subscription, not PPV - is HD and 5.1 sound if not better. I can tell the difference and it’s worth it, but the small jump from streaming HD to BR HD only matters for the tiny handful of films I buy in physical format for just that reason.
I’ll accept that there’s a whole universe of different viewing preferences, but that’s not “watching a movie” in my book. It’s distraction entertainment for doing chores.
I prefer to *watch *movies, but I have a high appreciation of the nuances of film. I’ve watched a few TV shows and movies on a small device, and between that and having distractions all around, it’s more like grinding through a homework assignment or burning through a video game to reach level 50 than anything very pleasurable.
You already have a box gizmo to watch streamed stuff on your TV. It’s called an iPad Get a cable already!
Same here. I haven’t purchased a DVD in five to eight years, and I haven’t watched one in the last three or four. I have a DVD player sitting under the TV, but the video isn’t hooked up, only audio – I use it for surround sound.
Well, in my example I was doing laundry while watching Get Shorty. I’ve seen it a dozen times and know chunks of dialogue by heart.
If I were watching something for the first time I’d more likely be watching without distractions (though still on my tablet).
DVDs from Netflix. Haven’t bought one in ages. I can stream, but given how much else there is to do, having the DVD sit there makes me much more likely to spend the time to watch it than to get around to watching something via streaming.
We mostly stream movies, but to be honest, I really miss Blockbuster. RedBox just isn’t adequate and our FIOS provides a pretty crappy movie-viewing experience. On the plus side, Amazon often notices that there are lots of hiccups and refunds the cost of the rental. I have no interest in buying DVDs.
I do sometimes go to the local thrift store and buy a bunch of movies for the kids on VHS. They’re 6 for $1, I think. We watch them once or twice and then re-donate them.
