Okay, I can link to web sites in my SDMB posts. I can link to threads. How do I identify a specific post and link to it?

Frusteratedly yours.

> If you wish to link to a specific post, you first need to get the post number. Put your mouse pointer over the quote button on the post you want. I don’t know of any computer way to capture the number, so I write it down, then plug it into the following formula:
>
> [Your post from 10:54 A.M.](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?postid=3136890#post3136890)

Seems like a long-winded way of doing it.

You can capture the postid number by right-clicking on any of either the report post, edit, or quote buttons and selecting Properties. You can then copy and paste it from the Properties dialog.

Aw crap. That code activated it’self.

Should be like this…

[Your post from 10:54 A.M.](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?postid=3136890#post3136890)
which gives, [Your post from 10:54 A.M.](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?postid=3136890#post3136890)

**Do not tie up the Search function simply to avail yourself of the following feature!**

If you are _already_ about to use the Search function to find a post that you think you may want to set as a link, note that one of the options on the lower left is to **Show results as posts** or **Show results as threads**. If you click the radio button for **Show results as posts** , when the search returns you will have two links for each hit, one to view the thread and one to view the post. If you click on the post link, the address displayed in your browser’s address window will be the direct link to that post.

**Do not tie up the Search function simply to avail yourself of the preceding feature!**

Since this is a question About This Message Board and **Q.E.D.** has provided a link to a thread in ATMB, I’ll just close this.
