Yea but that was probably the funniest I’ll ever be. That was the peak. It’ll just be a sad decline from here on - painful to watch. The other thing about a goodbye thread is that you have to hang around to read it. Would be rude to just disappear, someone might ask you a heartfelt question. It might turn into a multi-pager with various spin-off points so you might have to hang around for 2 or 3 weeks to see it out. And while you’re doing that you might as well be reading other threads and commenting as necessary. Whole thing gets messy. ---

I took an unnanounced break from the board once, and people contacted me to ask if everything was OK - I don’t consider myself special or particularly deserving of such attention, but people do notice when other posters stop posting. I think a non-flouncy “I’m taking a break, but everything is fine” message is probably just common courtesy, really. ---

How to quit a message board: step 1. Fill out this form letter: I can’t deal with the small minded posters here any more. You people, especially [insert posters, preferably ones who are better liked than you] are complete [insert not very clever words of dismissal] and think you’re the smartest, most special people in the world. But you’re not. You’re just a bunch of [insult weight or looks] [insult intelligence] [body parts]. I’ve come to hate all of you except [some equally batty or insipid posters]. There was a time when I thought our ideas meshed, like when [reference some lame feel good thread where everyone agreed] but lately I’ve discovered that you really [insert some sort of not terribly shocking revelation, like the fact that not everyone votes the same] and I’m both surprised and hurt by that. I feel like I don’t even know you people any more. [message board name] has changed, and not for the better. So that’s it. I’m not going to be posting any more, because I don’t care what you [collective noun insult] think any more. I’m leaving. You all suck. 1. After you post the thread, check for responses every couple of hours. 2. Despite promising that you’ll leave, respond to the responses in your I’m-leaving-this-place thread. Elaborate on why the posters suck, and why they’re making you leave. 3. Check back to see if anyone has protested your renewed threats that you’ll leave. Sulk if they haven’t. 4. Start an unwise pit thread. Get banned. ---

Are you kidding, your post count alone is like 67.48% of total posts on the board ever. If I bump into some random stranger on the street, chances are they’ve heard of you, and they’ll ask me where the hell you went. ---

I used to post on another board that was chock full of pretentious, humorless, stuck up, delusional morons. They put themselves across as delicate Jane Austens and Noel Cowards, though you just KNEW in reality they were dumpy housewives in smelly sweatpants. And I actually did tell them that I was leaving, and why, and that contrary to their own beliefs, yes, their shit did too stink. So I did leave. Went back to read a couple times, never posted there again, same group of genteel jackasses holding court there… ---

I 'dunno, man, the last time I quit a message board it got pretty crazy; the fucker started _stalking_ me. Made intimidating calls to my wife, threatened my kid, slashed my tires, boiled my housepets. I’d get these calls at 3:00am with a cold voice whispering, “…we’ll _always_ be together, Jettboy. Always.” ---

I actually quit this message board when they went pay-to-post and my subscription ran out and I didn’t want to pay again. I didn’t make any drama, just said I was leaving, and said goodbye to a bunch of people, and BOY am I glad I didn’t make any drama, because I think it was two months later that they went back to free posting. Yay! ---

Eh, my post count isn’t nearly as high as **Mangetout’s** but I took a little posting break a couple of years ago for a few months (6 maybe?) and quite a few people e-mailed to make sure everything was ok. So, even less prolific posters do make an impression with at least _SOME_ of their fellow posters. I agree, I little I need a break post is probably not a bad thing. A huge, this place sux, I hate how it’s going, you’ll miss me when I’m gone blow-up probably is. ---
