Hmm. That’s an excellent question. I’ve definitely mentioned what city I’m currently in, and that I work on the big Navy base in town. However, the fact that it’s a Navy base means StalkerMan wouldn’t be able to enter the base to find me on it. And I also haven’t said anything about where on the base I’m likely to be found.
As for where I’m currently residing, I must have mentioned that I’m staying with one of the former head guys of the base that everyone has known for 30 years (if I haven’t, I have now). With persistent effort, that name and thus the address could be found.
As for my more permanent home, I’ve revealed the general area (Bergen County, NJ), but I haven’t been any more specific. So, StalkerMan, you’d best get moving if you want to find me. You have 3 weeks.
I know someone whose job is to track down information from sources like message boards like this, in fact she told me about this site. They would give the person’s name, address history, and known email addresses, and she’d work from there. She spent most of the day searching forums and newsgroups for usernames and addresses associated with her subject, and put together lists of things that the client was interested in, like discussing confidential workplace information, bad-mouthing prior bosses, drug abuse, etc. She was able to show me message board posts I made back in 1997 that I had completely forgotten about which could hurt my job search if one of her clients hired her to check me out.
Interesting question. I have a limited presence on the web and very few posts but I’m not overly careful about what I say. Anyone want to give it a try with me? I only have 30 posts or so to go through.
BTW, I don’t do investigations, I was just guessing Ice Machine’s name based on his email address. I did a google search for “Mosher waterloo university” and saw a Tyler Mosher mentioned in a few places.
Workplace? probably, but I don’t always post in the correct tense, so you might go to the place I used to work. Home? no, not really. You know what town I live in and some of the activities I participate in. If you already know me, you could definitely pick me out online. I use different usernames on different sites and never make my e-mail address public since it is most of my legal name at my ISP dot net. I never post pictures of myself where I am identifiable and never allow others to post pictures of me with my name attached. I routinely google myself to make sure I’m not easily found.
And I’m armed too so I wouldn’t recommend trying anything.
I didn’t expect that part to be too hard at all (just from my public email address) but less than 10 minutes from my post is pretty quick. From there and my posts it’s probably pretty quick to track down my exact work location. If I had any reason to worry it would actually be pretty scary. It’s probably not hard to track down my home address, number etc. I better make sure I try not to piss-off anybody on here.
I think you would have to have encountered me on another bulletin board or newsgroup where my name or email were a matter of record, remember a few of my pet topics, characteristics, and online mannerisms, then happen onto the Dope and have a lightbulb go off. “Hey! I’ll bet he’s…”
My town is in my profile, as well as my e-mail, which is my last name @. Pick up a phone book or ask the lady at the post office, and it’s two blocks to my house.
But I have an attack dog, and a shotgun, and a husband who at 61 still gets in bar fights.
Probably not. I still think the Internet is for psychos, dorks and pedophiles so I never post personal information like addresses, schools or places I’ve worked. I may say which major city I live in but that narrows it down to like 10 million people. My username and info is completely bogus too.
I find the paranoia and need to mention gun collections and/or fighting prowess in this thread rather amusing. In the interest of disclosure, I have been stalked before and had to get court orders and all kinds of crap so it’s not that I don’t know what can happen.
Very easily. Just off the top of my head, my full name, email address, city and some weekly activities have been posted. There’s also a link to my weblog in my profile, which contains my phone number and (possibly) my street address.
Highly unlikely he could find me. What does he have to go on?
He could figue out I live in the Houston, TX metropolitan area. That narrows it down to about 4 million.
He could figure out I’m male. Make that 2 million.
He could probably deduce that I’m over 18, since I’ve referred to my college education.
He could figure out that I’m divorced.
He would know that I’m 5’9".
He would know that I’m half white and half Vietnamese.
The last one is the only one that really narrows it down, and it would still leave hundreds if not thousands of possibilities in a town with as huge a Vietnamese population as Houston. Actually, divorced, 5’9" and halfie: I’d say there are maybe 50 of us, at a WAG.
