I measured the distance yesterday using my pedometer. It’s approximately 720 metres i.e. about 0.447 miles. ---

OK, this thread appears to have run it’s course. My thanks go out to all 93 Dopers who posted here. Here’s some stats: Shortest distance: sassy, 0.21 miles Longest distance: mamatiger, 9581 miles % of dopers who live closer to their birthplace than I do: 10.6% A special shout out to Hal and kitten, who are married to each other and are currently living within 6 miles of each person’s birthplace.
