Google Maps tells me the walking distance is 0.5 miles. But Google Maps is clearly unfamiliar with the concept of ‘cutting through the Heaps’ back yard and across the elementary school playground’, which probably cuts that in more than half. Stupid Google Maps.
9.8 miles, but it being a rural area the bus ride was almost 1.5 hours. I was very glad when I got my car.

Need an explanation for why it was that far and what “travel sick” is.

Sorry - Country NSW it was the nearest high school. Travel sick /car sick/motion sickness
I too attended prep school (and love Harry Potter books for a large part because of it). The first three years we shared a campus with a college in Minnesota. During Junior year, the Synod purchased a separate campus for the Prep School - in Wisconsin. Senior year was a blast, in large part because kids discover and learn things much faster than adults and so we just got away with murder! (not actual murder, because we were mostly well-behaved, but a lot of on-campus breaking and entering for midnight snacks, copies of tests, visits to the girl’s dorm, midnight swims, etc.)
About six miles. If I wasn’t driving, I commonly walked home, as I could often beat the bus, especially if the cows weren’t in the pasture I needed to cut across to save two miles.
Google Maps says about three and a half kilometres. I could hoof it down given about half an hour, but I usually just took one or two buses.
I lived less than a block away. And yet I was still late every day
It was kind of annoying trying to convince the teachers that I didn’t need to wait for the emergency buses to arrive to go home, since we were already evacuated into my back yard.
I lived in three different houses when I was in high school.
the first one was easy walking distance, about 0.5 miles, as the crow flies, a 1/4 mile.
2nd house, was way across town. probably 2.5 miles as the crow flies, probably a mile further to drive.
3rd house was about about a mile walk.
I lived in rural Vermont in Jr High. My school was 3 miles away. if I had stayed in that town to go to High School, I would had my choice of three different High schools.
One was 7 miles, as the crow flies, it was about a 12 mile drive.
2nd choice was 9 miles as the crow flies, 15 miles drive
3rd choice was about the same as #2. ( this is the school that I was going to attend if we hadn’t moved)
