I couldn’t get this test to work. However, I have been tested for typing numerous times in the past.
I tend to be very inconsistant. For instance, I am really strugging with this post. Sometimes, the fingers just don’t want to find the right keys. I am very fluid with the backspace key as well. In fact, I’m sure that when I’m on a roll, I average hitting it about twice a minute.
Anyway: here are some of my test results:
In high school, the best I ever did was 39 wpm with about 98-99% accuracy. By the time I was out of college (I never really finished) I had gotten that up to around 50.
Then, about ten years passed when I took no typing tests. Most of that time, I never even touched a keyboard. I got my first computer “modern” computer about six years ago…and found I could type much better than I could when I was younger. I took an online typing test at about that time and scored about 65 wpm with 97% accuracy.
About three years ago, I took my most recent typing test. It was for work, and was actually rather interesting. They tested two ways…transfering type from another medium and a “free” writing period where I was allowed to type a couple of timed paragraphs from my head.
When copying, I scored a whopping 97 wpm with 97% accuracy. When typing from my head (basically composing a bit of prose), I typed 185 wpm with 100% accuracy…I was, and still am, shocked.
I’ve tried to duplicate that score with “home made” tests since then. Though I usually type well into the 100 wam range, I simply can’t imagine what had gotten into me when I typed that piece. I even mispelled “the” wrong once, as I so often do, by transposing the “h” and the “e”. That was two backspace strokes that aren’t even counted in the wpm score.
I also know there is room for improvement. I can perceive an almost inaudible amount of time between my pinky hitting shift and another finger hitting a different key. My fingers just can’t seem to twitch fast enough when I have to strike the same key twice in a row…especially the space bar. I have a bit of trouble with the pinky and ring numbers (1, 2, and 0)…that’s a long reach for such short digits.
Perhaps the fact that I’ve written several prose pieces over the past few years as well as two (horrible) novels of about 300 pages each as well as being about 500 pages into one that I deem to be about halfway finished (and actually readable) helps. I do a lot of composing from my head and very little copying.
