How fast do you type? (link to a test in case you don't already know)

Just did the Fishing in Finland test for the first time. Gross: 88 wpm, net: 87, 1 error. I wonder what would happen if I rushed through to complete it without fixing mistakes along the way?

I was doing the one with Cisco and AOL in it the first time and all the capital letters made it harder to type through.

81 words per minute with 96% accuracy.

And that’s with inch-long fingernails on both hands!!

1 minute test.
Gross speed:115 wpm
5 errors
Net speed: 110 wpm
Accuracy: 95%

I’m 15 as well - hurray for mmorpg’s.

56 WPM w/ 2 errors.

And that is essentially with 2 fingers!

No matter whether it works or not, Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing for 45 minutes every other day will screw you up for life, my friend.

Hey, hey. So am I.
I’ll be 14 in a few weeks. You?

109wpm, which I’m disappointed with. It used to be consistently around 120 or so.

Come back to me Mavis, I promise it’ll be different this time…

I couldn’t get this test to work. However, I have been tested for typing numerous times in the past.

I tend to be very inconsistant. For instance, I am really strugging with this post. Sometimes, the fingers just don’t want to find the right keys. I am very fluid with the backspace key as well. In fact, I’m sure that when I’m on a roll, I average hitting it about twice a minute.

Anyway: here are some of my test results:

In high school, the best I ever did was 39 wpm with about 98-99% accuracy. By the time I was out of college (I never really finished) I had gotten that up to around 50.

Then, about ten years passed when I took no typing tests. Most of that time, I never even touched a keyboard. I got my first computer “modern” computer about six years ago…and found I could type much better than I could when I was younger. I took an online typing test at about that time and scored about 65 wpm with 97% accuracy.

About three years ago, I took my most recent typing test. It was for work, and was actually rather interesting. They tested two ways…transfering type from another medium and a “free” writing period where I was allowed to type a couple of timed paragraphs from my head.

When copying, I scored a whopping 97 wpm with 97% accuracy. When typing from my head (basically composing a bit of prose), I typed 185 wpm with 100% accuracy…I was, and still am, shocked.

I’ve tried to duplicate that score with “home made” tests since then. Though I usually type well into the 100 wam range, I simply can’t imagine what had gotten into me when I typed that piece. I even mispelled “the” wrong once, as I so often do, by transposing the “h” and the “e”. That was two backspace strokes that aren’t even counted in the wpm score.

I also know there is room for improvement. I can perceive an almost inaudible amount of time between my pinky hitting shift and another finger hitting a different key. My fingers just can’t seem to twitch fast enough when I have to strike the same key twice in a row…especially the space bar. I have a bit of trouble with the pinky and ring numbers (1, 2, and 0)…that’s a long reach for such short digits.

Perhaps the fact that I’ve written several prose pieces over the past few years as well as two (horrible) novels of about 300 pages each as well as being about 500 pages into one that I deem to be about halfway finished (and actually readable) helps. I do a lot of composing from my head and very little copying.

70 wpm, 97% accuracy. Not too shabby, considering I only use three fingers on each hand (thumb, index and middle), and locate the keys from memory rather than starting with the home row.

I did purchase one of those home typing courses back in the days when I was using an electric typewriter, but found my own method quicker and easier, even if it does look amateurish. Whatever works best for the individual, I guess.

Gross speed 81 WPM, net speed 78 WPM, Accuracy 96%.

65 wpm, no errors, on the tiger text

Not too bad for a guy with stubby sausage fingers on an undersized laptop keyboard. My personal best (on an IBM Selectric back in high school) was 80wpm/no errors. Of course, the girl who sat next to me in typing class won a state typing competition with 160 wpm/no errors; she had to wait for the typewriter to catch up sometimes–Selectrics only had a 2-line buffer.

23 wpm at 95%, then I did it again and got 26 wpm with no errors. I’m AWESOME!!!

Neat. 83 WPM, 98% accuracy.

I feel so inadequate.
Gross speed: 42
Net speed: 40
Accuracy: 95%

Strategic Alliances with Competitors: 53 wpm gross speed, 52 wpm net speed, 98% accuracy.

Huckleberry Finn: 62 wpm, 100% accuracy.

Fishing in Finland: 65 wpm, 100% accuracy.

Tigers in the Wild: 59 wpm, 100% accuracy.

Hmm…wish I hadn’t look at the results of the first few posters before I took the test. I don’t think my hands could move that fast if I practiced for years.

Anyway, I got 52 with 91% accuracy. The debate of whether or not to stop and answer the phone probably hurt my speed a little, but oh well. I still type faster than anyone else here at work. And hopefully that wasn’t someone calling to say they aren’t coming in today…
