I’m not sure what Ivanka Trump converting to Judaism for marriage has to do with The Donald’s views on the subject (though I don’t think he is an anti-Semite either). ---

I think most of the problem with that as a generic defense against racism is that we assume that in fact none of that person’s best friends are negroes. Instead, there is exactly one colored family at his country club, and he speaks to them once or twice a year, plus he likes to think that he’s “friends” with the lady who cleans his toilet and the guy who picks up the garbage, in that he mostly knows their names. In the case of Trump, we know with fairly good certainty that many of the people he is actually closest to and respects most in the entire world (granted, a very short list) are Jews. I can well believe that Trump buys fully into some of the stereotypes about Jews, but many of those are, particularly to someone like Trump, positive stereotypes. Greedy and ready to screw you over at a moment’s notice? Just the kind of person Trump wants working for him (as long as they’re only screwing over his enemies, not Trump himself) (but of course they couldn’t because he’s the best screw-over-er in the history of screwing over). In addition, one of the few even remotely coherent policies that Trump has staked out seems to be strong support for Israel. Strong, stupid, and shortsighted, but he’s certainly not someone who believes in biblical end times, so it’s a bit hard to see why he’s be both anti-semitic and strongly pro-Israel. Now, please stop making me defend him. ---

I think it’s complicated. In high powered New York real estate / finance circles, Trump is a distinct minority as a non-Jew. And his crassness and ostentatiousness made him a bit of a laughingstock among those same people. And he hated it although he didn’t understand it. And because he didn’t understand it, he fought it by making the signage bigger and more golden. Which just made it worse. By contrast, Cohen Brothers - another large NYC real estate company, “brands” its buildings with a half inch wide clear stripe with word COHEN printed on it in white on the glass entry doors of their buildings. So the low key Jewish old money types of New York business have always looked down their noses at Trump and his big gold plated Richie Rich displays of wealth and it pisses his thin-skinned ass off. He simultaneously wants to “get back” at them and wants to be accepted by them. And he roller-coasters between the two and constantly sends mixed messages. ---

My own reason is that, although I could even sign up without paying to be able to read that one article, I don’t want to go through a process which tends to be more complicated than opening a bank account is in most countries, just so someone can send me spam or sell my email to a third party. Oh, but you can use a fake account, you say - see “complicated pain in the ass process”. ---
