I’m booked on a flight to Washington on Saturday, with the aim of spending next week doing research in the National Archives. The archives are, of course, closed during the shutdown, and now I have to reschedule my trip. At least I’m not going to be out a whole bunch of money. I was staying with family and not in a hotel, and I’m booked on Southwest, meaning that the only financial penalty for changing my reservation is whatever the difference in airfare would be. Still, I now have to find another week, probably during the semester, to make the trip. Incredibly annoying. I can only imagine how frustrating and scary it must be for people who are actually losing their income over this, or who face the prospect of losing government benefits like SNAP. ---

Stories like this need to be told more often. The closing of the Archives and the Smithsonian have put a halt to research in a broad spectrum of fields, with more than time and money wasted. I sympathize with tourists who missed out, but that pales in comparison to the work not being done. And of course, to the businesses that rely on both scholars and tourists. I’m sorry this is happening to you, **mhendo,** and hope it works out soon. ---

Yeah, this is almost excusable. I get that they’re on a skeleton crew, but I would think he could have sprung for better catering. I would think there are restaurants and caterers in the area that were still open that would have been happy to cater it. And Trump loves to tell everyone how rich he is. He could have maybe bought Noodles and Company at least. Or maybe decent pizza from a local place. It’s a totally trivial thing, just annoying and humorous. ---

Guys. His _hotel_ is two blocks away. He could’ve had the meal catered by his hotel, yet he decided not to. Whether it’s cheapness or personal preference, he has a hotel capable of handling large scale events (including meals), and he elected not to use it. ---
